WHAT ARE STUDENT LEARNING
OUTCOMES?
TARGET OUTCOMES

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to

 Explain the importance and characteristics of
student learning outcomes;
 Identify the bases of constructing student learning

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

 All assessment and evaluation activities should start with

the identification and clarification of the student learning
outcomes (SLO).
 The identified and clarified student learning outcomes

 are centered on the students, on what
the learners are capable of doing, 1. Video presentation of the life cycle of a butterfly
instead of the teaching technique 2. Poster presentation of the different stages in the
development of a butterfly
3. Field trip to a botanical garden or nature park to
 Example Student Learning Outcome observe the different stages in the life cycle of a
“The students can explain and illustrate butterfly
the life cycle of an insect.” 4. Submission of an essay on the dangers observed
that will interrupt or abort the life cycle of the
butterfly
5. Submission of a proposed project to protect the
life cycle of insects or other useful animals
GOOD LEARNING OUTCOMES ARE:
BASED FROM A GOOD SOURCE

 based on the program mission statement agreed upon by the program faculty in consultation
with other stakeholders like alumni and other professionals
 from government regulatory agencies such as DepEd’s K to 12 Law Enhanced Basic
Education in the Philippines, the CHED’s Policies, Standards and Guidelines on Teacher
Education,
 thrusts of appropriate professional organizations and advocacies of employer and industry
groups
GOOD LEARNING OUTCOMES ARE:
HEARED

 very well understood by both students and faculty

 They should be in agreement on the importance of these competencies which they will
cooperatively develop.
H - Hooking the students to the desired learning outcome
E - Exploring and experiencing the supporting student activities
A - Applying the ideas/knowledge required in contrived, simulated, or real-life situations
R - Reining, rehearsing, reviewing, the target skills/competencies
E - Evaluation the degree of learning outcome performance
D - Deciding on the action, solution, or creative project to apply the learning outcome
GOOD LEARNING OUTCOMES:
INCLUDE SPECTRUM OF THINKING SKILLS

 from simple to the higher order application of knowledge and skills

 Here is an example of a range of learning outcomes from the simple to the complex under the
competency: “ability to understand.”
a. Can identify e. Can synthesize
b. Can explain f. Can evaluate
c. Can apply g. Can judge
d. Can analyze h. Can create
GOOD LEARNING OUTCOMES ARE:
MEASURABLE

 Student competencies should be expressed as transitive verbs and/or action words which
are demonstrable and observable at various levels.
