Public Enterprise in South Asia

• Diverse form of government.

• South Asian countries models where copied from Britain.

• 1970

• Despite differences in political structure among South Asian countries they share
considerable similarities in the overall mode of governance.
• In 1970s countries like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh promoted policy of displacing
private sector for the expansion of Public sector while Pakistan and Nepal Public
enterprise is limited to supporting role to private enterprise.

Role of Public Enterprise in South Asia

• Provision of more employment opportunity.

• Even distribution of amenities.

• Access to more capital.

• Prevention of exploitation.

• Provision of essential services.

• Filling the gap where private enterprise is unstable and difficult to engage.

Disadvantages of Public Enterprise:

• In-efficiency

• Delay in decision making

• High rate of embezzlement

• Government interference

• Frequent changes in board members
