Naming Compounds

I. BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS WITH FIXED OXIDATION NUMBER

 Compound containing metal or cation with fixed oxidation number and nonmetal or anion .
 Elements with fixed oxidation number are from group IA to VIIIA (representative elements)

 to name this compound give the name of the metal first followed by the name of the nonmetal.
Identify the stem of the nonmetal then replace the ending with the suffix -ide
Example:
Chemical Formula Name
1. NaCl Sodium chloride
2. Mg3N2 Magnesium nitride
3. Li2O Lithium oxide

TRY THESE! (5points)

1. CaBr2 ___________________ 4. CaCl2 ____________________
2. ZnI2 ___________________ 5. KBr2 ____________________
3, AlO2 ___________________

II. BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS WITH VARIABLE OXIDATION NUMBER

 Elements with variable oxidation number are from transition elements

 There are two methods of naming these compounds

A. Systemic or Stock Method- using roman numeral in the names of the metal with more than one
charge
B. Classical or Traditional Name - uses latin names of the element and the suffix -ous for lower
oxidation number or charge and -ic for higher oxidation number or charge of cation or metal
Example:

Compound Stock or Systemic Classical or Traditional

FeCl2 Iron (II) chloride Ferrous chloride
FeCl3 Iron (III) chloride Ferric chloride
CuO Copper (I) oxide Cuprous Oxide
CuO2 Copper (II) oxide Cupric Oxide
SnCl3 Tin (III) chloride Stannous chloride
SnCl4 Tin (IV) chloride Stannic chloride

2. PbO4
3. HgCl 7. 10.
4. HgCl2
5. CoCl2 8. 11.
6. CoCl3

III. BINARY MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS CONTAINING TWO NONMETALS

 Name the first element
 Name the second element and change the ending to -ide
 Add the prefixes to indicate the number of each atom
