SUBJECT: Textron Lycoming Service Bulletin No. 499

“Installation of One-Piece Exhaust Pipe”

COMPLIANCE TIME: As specified by the attached Textron-Lycoming Service Bulletin.

PURPOSE: The Service Bulletin is to assure distribution of the subject Textron

Lycoming Service Bulletin affecting the above Turbo Lance and Turbo
Saratoga aircraft exhaust systems. This Textron-Lycoming Service
Bulletin provides for improvements to the exhaust system which will
reduce the possibility of exhaust system leakage or failure which had been
caused by misalignment or improper installation on the previous two-
piece number 6 cylinder exhaust pipe.

Failure to comply with this Service Bulletin in the time specified could
result in exhaust system leakage which could damage the engine, engine
accessories, or airframe structure. In extreme cases, this leakage could
lead to engine failure or fire.

Textron-Lycoming Service Bulletin No. 484 (See Piper Service Bulletin

No 904 dated March 20, 1989) called for an Inspection and alignment of
the exhaust system, and Incorporation of an Improved two-piece cross-
over tube.

The subject publication Introduces the availability of a new one-piece

exhaust pipe which eliminates the V-band coupling and gasket required on
the two-piece pipe assembly, by integrating the number 6 cylinder
exhaust pipe and the left Intermediate exhaust pipe.

TIME OF COMPLIANCE: Within the next 25 hours of operation.
NOTE
If Service Bulletin No. 484, Part II, and/or
AD 89-12-04 has not been complied with,
the crossover exhaust pipe Kit (05K21125)
must be installed along with this new, one-
piece exhaust pipe Kit (05K21503). Note in
log book that both Service Bulletin No. 484
and this Service Bulletin have been complied
with.
A new, one-piece exhaust pipe (40B21875)that in-
tegrates the number 6 cylinder exhaust pipe (LW-15809)
and the left intermediate exhaust pipe (LW-15811)has
superseded the two-piece pipe assembly. The new
design eliminates the V-band coupling and gasket
employed on the two-piece configuration.
Install the one-piece pipe as follows:
(1)Remove left side exhaust manifolds (No. 2,4,
and 6 exhaust pipes) and the crossoverexhaust
pipes.
NOTE
To facilitate alignment of all exhaust pipes
during reassembly, loosen all other exhaust
system pipes, turbocharger/transition
assembly, and all support members. At this
time inspect entire exhaust system for

cracks or distortion. Replaceany discrepant
parts.
(2) Before reassemblingthe exhaust system, mark
the male end of each pipe with a nongraphite
marker, such as Colorbrite Pencil Nos. 2127,
4127,or a Marks-A-Lot pencil, so that at least
1.50 inches of pipe is availablefor engagement
at each slip joint.
(3) Then coat the slip joints with an anti&x com-
pound, such as high temperature Fel-Pro C5A,
or equivalent.
(4) Replace all exhaust pipe gaskets (LW-15619).
(5) Loosely install crossover support clamp and
cable-assembly clamps on pipes, per Figures
2 and 3. Note that clamp (07C21369)replaces
clamp (LW-14955).
(6) Assemble, as a unit, the new No. 6 cylinder
exhaust pipe and crossover pipes along with
the Nos. 2 and 4 exhaust pipes. Rotate pipes
(LW-16102and LW-16103)as necessary to align
Nos. 2,4, and 6 cylinders’ exhaust pipes. Note
that the joint between the crossover pipes is
not a slip joint but an alignmentjoint only. This
joint is fixed once the heat shield and the
crossover support clamp are installed.
(7) Tighten loosened exhaust components to
specifiedtorque valueslisted in Tableof Limits.

(8) Install crossover support brackets. (See Figure
3.)
(9) Locate and tighten cable assemblyclampsand
cable per Figure 2. Install the cable with ap-
proximately l/8-inch slack.
(l0) Mount heat shield on crossover pipe. Then
rotate heat shield as necessary so that approx-
imately l/8-inch clearance exists between
crossover support brackets and heat shield.
Tighten clamps. (See Figure 3, detail A.)

(11) Ensure that at least 3/8-inch clearance is
available between the heat shield and the stif-
fening rib on firewall. If not, trim heat shield
as shown in Figure 4 to obtain necessary
clearance.
(12)Again inspect the entire exhaust systemto en-
sure that all fastenersare properly torqued and
that no exhaust pipes, heat shield or other ex-
haust system parts contact airframe com-
ponents. Also inspect each slip joint to insure
that the male pipe has at least 1.5 inches
engagement.
