The Bicol Regional Museum, previously established as the Cagsawa Branch Museum, was
inaugurated on October 30, 1992, featuring a geology exhibition. Eventually, exhibitions on
archaeology and botany were added a few years later.

Mission
The primary mission of the National Museum of the Philippines is to acquire, document,
preserve, exhibit, and foster scholarly study and appreciation of works of art, specimens, and
cultural and historical artifacts.

4. The National Museum Bicol has a permanent exhibition entitled, Bicolandia: Land of Volcanoes
with four (4) galleries: Gallery 1-From Mantle to Surface; Gallery 2-Living with Volcanoes; Gallery
3-Biodiversity of Bicol; and Gallery 4-Living with Volcanoes.

Under Gallery 1, there are different types of rocks collected from Bicol region where most of
these rocks are millions of years old.

In Gallery 3, there are animal fossils with one (1) plant fossil. There are preserved plants and
animals on display while there are also replicas.

In Gallery 4, there are actual minerals found in Bicol.

6. The museum stands in a strategic location since it is near the 208-year-old Cagsawa Ruins, a
National Cultural Treasure (NCT).

7. The National Museum of the Philippines in Bicol celebrates the resilience of Bicolanos who have
been for centuries withstanding natural disasters, like the eruptions of volcanoes including
Mayon, and typhoons that pass year-round.

It is one of the 16 Regional, Area, and Site Museums across the country, along with the other
four (4) Central Museums in Manila. This museum, located at Busay, Daraga, Albay, sits next to
the Cagsawa Ruins, a National Cultural Treasure (NCT) that withstood Mayon Volcano's 1814
Plinian eruption.

inaugurated on October 30, 1992, featuring a geology exhibition. Exhibitions on archaeology and
botany were added a few years later.

The 2006 Super Typhoon Reming triggered a lahar that inundated the Museum, prompting the
transfer of its exhibitions to Tabaco City, Albay, in 2008 until 2018.

The National Museum of the Philippines completed the two-year rehabilitation and upgrading of
its 1992 museum building and premises at Busay, Daraga, Albay, last 2019.

The global pandemic and the lahars brought by Super Typhoon Rolly in 2020 did not hamper
NMP’s efforts to install new exhibition in 2022.

The much-awaited exhibitions were installed in March 2022. The soft opening was scheduled
last September 8, 2022 while the museum officially welcomed the public last October 8, 2022.
The indoor exhibition which is entitled, Bicolandia: Land of Volcanoes, features Bicol's natural
history underscoring the region's unique geological landscapes and endemicity of its flora and
fauna. Outdoor exhibitions such as the rock garden, botanical garden, plant nursery, butterfly
sanctuary, and observatory for stargazing complete the museum facility for leisure and learning.

8. This year, we forecast a total of 10,500 museum visitors over three months (October to
December 2022), while we anticipate 36,000 visitors in fiscal year 2023.

Appropriations Fund allotted from the Department of Budget and Management

10. The National Museum Bicol is a perfect place to inspire, promote, and boost awareness of the
region's natural, cultural, and artistic heritage through its research, specimens and objects on
display, and educational programs.
