Sub Plans - Music

5th grade music 9:05-9:45

Procedures – students will line up outside at the door. Students are expected to be in a straight
line, not talking before entering the music room. When students are ready, teacher will instruct
students to remove shoes and sit on the carpet in front of the stage.

Activity 1 – Music packets. You can ask for helpers to pass out – pencils, clipboards, and
packets. Students can work together in pairs if students work quietly. For pages 1 and 2 of
packet, students need to match up the syllables of the word with the written rhythm. Ex on first
page – “Ground Beef” equals 2 quarter notes (2nd box top right) “Pep-pe-ro-ni” would be 4
eighth notes (first box top left). Have students write name on top and hand in packets when
finished.

Activity 2 - If there is still time left you can hand out the “Keep the Beat 3” body percussion
worksheet. Students should work in pairs only and focus on figuring out the finger snaps and
hand claps parts. These worksheets should be returned at the end of class.

Cleanup-have students help pick up pencils, put away clipboards and hand in their work in a
neat pile on desk.

Dismissal - Instruct students to put shoes, line up and walk to their next class.

Kindergarten music 10:00-10:40

Space out 10 colored circles on the floor in a circle before students arrive.

Procedures: Kindergarten will line up outside. When they are in a straight line and quiet,
instruct them to go inside, remove shoes and coats and then to sit on a circle. If the circles
become a distraction to students – students start to do anything other than sit on the circles,
issue a warning, ask them to place the circles underneath them or you will take it away.
(Thomas may need to have his circle taken away)

Activity 1 – Musical Memory Game

Mix up the cards and place them face down in the middle of circle. Go around the circle, having
each child flip two cards to find the match. If you find that some students are getting
discouraged because they cannot find a match, you can always change the game around and
have the students work together as one team so that it becomes students vs. teacher.

Activity 2 – Instrument Family Identification

Each student receives a worksheet with 12 instrument cards. They need to put the instrument
under the correct category (Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, String). They may need help reading
the names of the families. Help them tape the cards as they finish. FYI- they learned that the
piano belongs to both the string and percussion family. For this assignment the piano will be a
part of the string family.

Activity 3 – Musical Instrument Books

Have them color their workbooks while listening to music. Ask for helpers to pass out pencils,
clipboards, workbooks and crayons.
There is a cable on my desk that you can plug into a phone or laptop. We have been listening
to the Encanto soundtrack. You can pull it up on YouTube. If the sound does not come out
through the overhead speakers, try removing the cable and plugging it into your device again.
Sometimes I find I need to do this up to 3 times in order for it to connect. If you can’t get it to
work it’s no problem.

Cleanup- Allow 5 minutes for cleanup. Again, ask for helpers to put things away including
collecting the colored circles.

Dismissal - Have students put shoes and coats on and line up at the door. Their teacher will
come get them.

Answers to the following questions:
How do I find the MIDI keyboard?
Go to “Window” at the top of the screen – Show Musical Typing

If the MIDI keyboard is not working, make sure to highlight the MIDI track. If a track using a
loop is highlighted or selected, the MIDI keyboard will not work.

If you are still having problems, create a new MIDI track. Go to: Track – New Track – Software
Instrument – Create.
This will automatically give you a piano MIDI track but you can change the sounds from your
library located on the left hand side. If you close your sound library and want to reopen it, click
on library icon.
