CEN 430 ASSIGNMENT 3 SPRING 2012

CEN 430- Assignment #3

PROBLEM 1
The figure below shows an exterior column in a multi-story frame. The dimensions are
center-to-center of the joints. The beams are 30cm wide by 45cm deep. The building
includes a service core (assembly of shear walls) which resists the majority of lateral
loads. Use f’c= 35 MPa and fy=420 MPa. The loads and moments on column AB are:

Service dead loads:

Axial force = 960 KN

Moment at top= 75 KN-m
Moment at bottom= 95 KN-m

Service Live load:

Axial force = 560 KN

Moment at top= 45 KN-m
Moment at bottom= 65 KN-m

A clockwise moment is considered positive.

Design column A-B using a square section with at least three bars per face.

PROBLEM 2
The sway frame shown below is subjected to gravity (dead and live) and wind loads
(Figure 2). The dimensions are center-to-center of the joints. The beam is 40cm wide by
60cm deep. Columns are assumed fixed at their bases. Material strengths are f’c= 28
MPa and fy= 420 MPa. Design the two tied columns using a square section with a
longitudinal reinforcing ratio between 2 and 3%. Design to include longitudinal
reinforcement placed on 4 sides and transverse reinforcement.

Consider the following load combinations:

U= 1.2D +1.6L
U=1.2D+1.0L+1.6W
U= 0.9D+1.6W

Figures 3 to 5 show service (unfactored) moment diagrams in KN-m (left) and base
reactions in KN (right) under dead, live and wind load respectively. Moments are drawn
on the tension side.

Note: PCA column software can be used to select the longitudinal steel

w DL = 20KN/m
w LL = 50 KN/m
