INTRODUCTION

DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing) is the national platform

for school education available for all states and the central government for Grades
1 to 12, and was launched in September 2017. DIKSHA can be accessed through a
web-portal and mobile application. It is a customizable platform which is
currently being used by teachers (from both government and private
institutions) across the nation for all the standards to help the students learn
several concepts. The portal is accessible in many languages for easy
understandability of the user.

Amid the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, a national lockdown has been

announced by the Prime Minister of India, who has requested all the citizens to
cooperate and stay at home to curb the spread of Corona Virus. During the
turbulent times when the students are missing out on studies, the Ministry of
Human Resource Development (MHRD) in association with National Council for
Teacher Education (NCTE) have launched an initiative in the domain of digital
learning, named, DIKSHA. The aim of this initiative is to help teachers and the
students to continue their studies as usual, however, through different mode.

Assam has also made significant steps towards its outreach program for DIKSHA.
The Education Minister of the state has promoted DIKSHA as “one nation one
digital platform” and the state has witnessed over 9.6 lakh content plays over the
last few months.

FEATURES OF DIKSHA APP:-

Some important features of DIKSHA app that should be discussed before

reviewing the e-contents:

❖ It works in both offline and online modes, where continuous connecting is

not necessary to use DIKSHA.
❖ It can be accessed by learners and teachers across the country and currently
supports 12 languages including English, Hindi, Bengali and Assamese.
❖ The portal would first ask for location to which you belong. Accordingly, it
will show you the courses that are going on in that region for which you can
choose the desired courses.
❖ It helps the students to understand concepts in an easy and interactive
manner.
❖ It also helps students to examine his/her learning via self-assessment
practice exercises.

REVIEW OF E-CONTENTS OF DIKSHA APP

I, Rahul Sen, a trainee of DIET (D.El.Ed. 4th Semester), want to share my

experience of using DIKSHA app. I have gone through almost all the e-contents
linked to the respective lessons of different subjects. By observing these e-
contents, I have found 5 best e-contents of this app that should be reviewed.

1. Ten Little Fingers (English - Class 3): This e-content is a presentation

containing videos which was created by Angarag Kumar Bhuyan. The slides
begin with the name of the lesson and some learning objectives. After that a
video is played that tells about the different parts of our body. Then a
computerized voice starts reciting the poem correctly. In the next video,
some children recite the poem in a beautiful manner. The slides also contain
an activity of matching names with the images of body parts. In my view,
the content creator could have used some more animations that can help to
draw attention of the students. However, the rhythm and intonation used for
reciting the poem is perfect for learning and memorizing it.
2. Lines and Angles (Mathematics - Class 7): This e-content is in video
format which was created by Luna Jyoti Saikia. In this lecture, the angle and
its parts are explained explicitly. Then different types of angles are
explained using some images such as mountain peak, beak of a bird, black
board, open book, laptop, etc. These objects are familiar to every student so
this method of teaching enables the students understand this lesson properly.
The content creator then explains the complementary and the supplementary
angles using the image of a clock and also tells more about angles. The
sound effects used in this lecture make the online education more engaging
and effective.
3. Air Around Us (Science - Class 6): This e-content is based on an animated
video with two cartoon characters – Ankit and Pawan. In this video, both the
characters are discussing about an exhibition that will be conducted in their
school. They decide to take part in the exhibition and do an experiment for
their project. In this video, several experiments are performed by these
characters. These experiments are explained very explicitly. This elaborative
explanation enables the students understand concepts like contraction and
expansion, components of air, air pollution, etc. This method of teaching
makes the online education more interesting and engaging.
4. Environment Pollution (Environmental Studies - Class 5): In this e-
content, the topic is Soil Pollution which was created by Bitumani Das. In
this presentation, concepts like soil, soil pollution, causes of soil pollution,
effects of soil pollution and measures to reduce soil pollution are covered by
the content creator. In these slides, animated videos are also given that help
to attract most of the students. As the content creator emphasized more on
dictating the contents rather than explaining them, some students may have
difficulty in understanding the concepts clearly. In my view, the content
creator should have focused on brief explanation so that students are able to
understand the concepts more efficiently in less time. However, the best part
in this e-content is that multiple choice questions (MCQs) and match the
following questions are provided along with it. It will help the students to
assess their learning.
5. Our Earth in the Solar System (Social Studies - Class 6): In this video
lecture, the content creator explains the concept of solar system. The content
creator tells about the sun and eight planets which move around the sun. He
also explains the satellites and some other celestial bodies. With the help of
a diagram of the solar system, he explains the positions of the eight planets
from the sun and also gives an easy way to memorize the name of the
planets in order of their distance from the sun. The content creator also gives
some useful facts about our solar system. In all, this lecture is very
informative for all. The sound quality of the video is also quite good for all
the listeners. As an observer, I fully enjoy the lecture.
CONCLUSION: - I have used this app for about a week and observed the
contents thoroughly. Now I can say that the app is user-friendly and all the
contents are relevant to the requirements of the students. Students can easily learn
the concepts and get their doubts cleared as and when doubt arises. They can also
download and save the useful videos and PDF files. The app also facilitates the
students to test their learning through self-assessment practice exercises. Overall
this is excellent app from Government of India for both the teachers and the
students.
