Constraints yield Consistent sets of D, s

, C
b
, L, B, T. These candidate
parameters need to be assessed for:
Layout, payload effectiveness,

S , cost
2. Para survey in 2 stages.
(a) Major : Hold form coefficient constant. Vary D ( no. of decks) & s

.
(b) Minor : with selected s

& D ( no. of decks) . Study effect of C

3. Selection of Main Dimensions from Powering and Seakeeping
considerations :
Calm Water resistance based on optimum L/B, C
b
, B/T.
Good Motion response with a large beam, Length, Small T and Small C
vp
,
large C
wp
Compromise on Added Resistance in Waves due to a bias for parameters
ensuring good seakeeping ( Platform Stability)
Slamming to be minimised for ship to maintain speed in waves : small B, deep
T and a shorter ship favorable : Reduce the possibility of keel emergence and
slamming
4.
Bales Seakeeping Criteria :
R = 8.42 + 45.1C
WF
+10.1C
WA
-378 T/L + 1.27 C/L 23.5 C
VPF
15.9 C
VPA
Following correlate well with the above ranks :
(a) Pitch and heave amplitude
(b) Relative bow motion and absolute acceleration at stern
(c) Absolute motion at stern
Poor correlation of relative motion and slamming
Due to ve coeff of T/L : Small T is advantageous .Can reduce motions but
not slamming
Bales work does not relate a term to wetness and doesnot consider freeboard
or A/W form which are actually contributing to performance of real or measured
data
