Rationale:
Indian Penal Code is a very important set of regulation which is very important for the system to be operated in a
proper way. It is the main criminal code of India. There are various offences that are made under this law. The Indian
Penal Code includes all the relevant criminal offences dealing with offences against the state, offenses for public,
offences for armed forces, kidnapping, murder, and rape. It deals with offense related to religion, offences against
property and it has an important section for offences for marriage, cruelty from husband or relatives, defamation and
so on so forth. It is not only important for India but every country should have a Penal Code in order for its system to
be operated in a systematic way. This document majorly covers all the basic offences which are highlighted in the
society.
Objectives:
1. To introduce the students to the basic principles of criminal law.
2. There has been a progressive as well as regressive change in the Indian society since Independence. A proper
understanding of crimes and the casual factors for the occurrence of crime is extremely important in the larger context
of India’s development, if young law students are to use their knowledge and skills to build a just and humane society.
3. The young law students are the future lawyers and as such they must have an acquaintance with such knowledge to
make criminal justice system serve the goals of social defense as well as social justice.

Intended learning outcome:


1. The students shall be aware of the basic concepts of law, which will make them socially aware.
2. They shall be aware of the various circumstances under which a person commits crime, which will help them in
forming a more rationale outlook.

 Stages of Crime – Mensrea & Actus Reus.

 Wrongful gain.
 Wrongful loss.
 Fraudulently.
 Reason to believe.
 Act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention (section- 34).
 Good faith.
Module II
General exceptions
 Mistake of Fact & Mistake of Law
 Accident.
 Necessity.
 Insanity.
 Intoxication.
 Infancy.
 Private Defence

Module III
Specific offences against human body
 Culpable Homicide.
 Murder.
 Dowry death.
 Abetment of suicide and attempt to commit suicide.
 Hurt and Grievous Hurt
 Wrongful restraint, wrongful confinement.
 Kidnapping, abduction.
 Rape and Criminal Amendment Act 2013 - Unnatural offences.

Module IV
Offences relating to marriage
 Bigamy.
 Adultery.
 Cruelty by husband or relatives of husband.
