Millions of people today wear some kind of eyeglasses to correct

their vision. Even in ancient times many people used some type of aid for
poor vision. In the thirteenth century, Marco Polo saw people in China
wearing glasses.
The first spectacles for farsighted people were used like a magnifying
glass and held in the hand. Some of them were clamped on the nose. Some
were strapped around the head. Finally, side pieces were added to them so
they could be looped over the ears.
A farsighted person might need one pair of glasses for distance and
one for close work. Benjamin Franklin invented bifocals so that he could
look at close objects and distant ones through the same pair of glasses.
