The first rules, court and game


In early December 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian-born __1__ professor who worked at
Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, was trying to keep his gym class __2__
on a rainy day. He looked for an indoor game to keep his students moving at good levels of
fitness __3__ the long New England winters. He wanted __4__ ball sport that was less
dangerous. After rejecting other ideas as too rough, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach
basket onto a 10-foot (3.05 m) balcony. In __5__ with modern basketball nets, this peach

scored. The peach baskets were used until 1906 when they were finally replaced by metal hoops
