WHAT IS CLAY?
Clay is a fine-grained silicate mineral made
when rocks break down. Wet clay is soft and
can be shaped to make pottery, bricks and
other things. When it is shaped and then fired
in a kiln to make it hard, it becomes pottery.
Clay often contains some water because the
water molecules stick to the tiny grains.
What is Ceramics?
A ceramic is any of the various hard, brittle,
heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant
materials made by shaping and then firing a
nonmetallic mineral, such as clay, at a high
temperature Common examples are,
earthenware, porcelain, and brick.
What is Wedging and why is it
important?
Wedging prepares the clay for optimal use.
Step 2: Hold the ball in one hand and slowly push your thumb into the centre of the clay.
Step 3: Gently pinch the clay between your thumb on the inside, and your fingers on the
outside while slowly turning the ball of clay in your hand.
Step 4: Apply even pressure as you turn the clay. Check to see that the clay is the same
thickness on the walls and rim of the pot.
Step 5: Gently tap the pot on the table to make a flat base.
Step 6: Make some SLIP by mixing some clay with water until it is like a creamy milkshake.
Step 7: Place a small piece of clay into a garlic press and squeeze it out then use the clay
strings to decorate your pinch pot.
Step 8: Use a toothbrush to make some scratch marks where you want to add clay. Use the
toothbrush or your fingers to add some slip to the score marks.
Step 9: Place the clay string on top of the scored clay, gently press it into the clay. Be sure it is
securely fastened.
Step 10: Allow the pinch pot to dry for about 5 days.
