WHAT IS CLAY?
Clay is a fine-grained silicate mineral made
when rocks break down. Wet clay is soft and
can be shaped to make pottery, bricks and
other things. When it is shaped and then fired
in a kiln to make it hard, it becomes pottery.
Clay often contains some water because the
water molecules stick to the tiny grains.
What is Ceramics?
A ceramic is any of the various hard, brittle,
heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant
materials made by shaping and then firing a
nonmetallic mineral, such as clay, at a high
temperature Common examples are,
earthenware, porcelain, and brick.
What is Wedging and why is it
important?
Wedging prepares the clay for optimal use.

Wedging makes the clay more flexible, ensures

a uniform consistency, removes air pockets as
well as small hard spots in the clay before you
use it. Wedging the clay before using makes
the clay more supple.
What is firing and what is the
device used for this process?
The firing process turns raw clay into ceramic
through high-temperature heating. This
usually happens in a kiln. Clay often goes
through two types of firing - bisque firing and
glaze firing. These are open firing and the use
of kilns.
What is Glaze?
Glaze is a water-resistant layer or coating of
a vitreous substance which has been fused
to a ceramic body through firing. Glaze can
serve to color, decorate or waterproof an
item.Glazing renders earthenware vessels
suitable for holding liquids, sealing the
inherent porosity of unglazed biscuit
earthenware. It also gives a tougher surface.
Glaze is also used on stoneware and
porcelain. In addition to their functionality,
glazes can form a variety of surface finishes,
including degrees of glossy or matte finish
and color. Glazes may also enhance the
underlying design or texture either
unmodified or inscribed, carved or painted.
What is a Pinch Pot?
A pinch pot is a simple form of
hand-made pottery produced from
ancient times to the present. The
pinching method is to create pottery that
can be ornamental or functional, and
has been widely employed across culture.
The method used is to simply have a lob
of clay, then pinch it to the shape
desired.
The Step by Step process of “Pinch Pot”
Step 1: Roll a small ball of clay about the size of a clementine orange.

Step 2: Hold the ball in one hand and slowly push your thumb into the centre of the clay.

Step 3: Gently pinch the clay between your thumb on the inside, and your fingers on the
outside while slowly turning the ball of clay in your hand.

Step 4: Apply even pressure as you turn the clay. Check to see that the clay is the same
thickness on the walls and rim of the pot.

Step 5: Gently tap the pot on the table to make a flat base.

Step 6: Make some SLIP by mixing some clay with water until it is like a creamy milkshake.

Step 7: Place a small piece of clay into a garlic press and squeeze it out then use the clay
strings to decorate your pinch pot.

Step 8: Use a toothbrush to make some scratch marks where you want to add clay. Use the
toothbrush or your fingers to add some slip to the score marks.

Step 9: Place the clay string on top of the scored clay, gently press it into the clay. Be sure it is
securely fastened.

Step 10: Allow the pinch pot to dry for about 5 days.
