Threshold 7 Agriculture and Globalization Overview and Workplan-1
Module 1
Threshold 7 - Agriculture and Globalization: An Interplay
OVERVIEW
The first part of the module is a review of the concepts discussed from thresholds 1 to 6 in Big
History 1. It is a reminder that the universe is intricately made and designed as evidenced by the
natural patterns we see around us; especially the magnificent operations seen in the cosmos.
We are a part of the universe and we play an important role in discovering its truth and beauty.
The happenings in the universe along with the many events in our lives do not always transpire
as planned (according to our thinking and understanding). What appears as messy, disorganized,
chaotic both in the universe and in our lives are, in reality, part of a grand scheme preparing the
universe and us for something else. Something that is probably greater and grander. The onset
of agriculture is the greatest result of our collective efforts as humans. It paved the way for many
trinkets of discoveries which gave rise to civilizations and technological breakthroughs, even
lifestyle and trading practices. From a nomadic existence inching towards a sedentary lifestyle,
agriculture introduced to us what it means to manipulate the environment rather than the
environment manipulating us. With globalization as an inescapable reality, how can we better
understand the importance and contributory role of agriculture to our development as humans
(via an understanding of concepts like Human Development Index (HDI) and UNESCO’s
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? Most importantly, let us try to see the connection
between Christianity and globalization. With the topics presented herewith, it is our goal to
initially develop COMPETENCE among our students.
