ELEMENTS OF MUSIC IN THE CONTEXT OF CLASSICAL PERIOD
 Simple Recall: It is important to consider the different elements of music as basis for
understanding the music of the Classical period.
Basic Elements of Music and its related terms:
 Rhythm: (beat, meter, tempo, syncopation)
 Dynamics: (forte (f ), piano (p), sforzando (sf) [etc.], crescendo, decrescendo)
 Melody: (pitch, theme, conjunct, disjunct)
 Harmony: (chord, progression, consonance, dissonance, key, tonality, atonality)
 Tone color: (register, range, instrumentation)
 Texture: (monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic, imitation, counterpoint)
 Form: (binary, ternary, strophic, through-composed)
 Music of the Classical period has a texture that is mainly homophonic. Most melodies is being
accompanied in chordal. Variety and contrast within a piece became more evident. The use of
varying keys, melodies, rhythms and dynamics is a common practice along with frequent
changes of mood.
 They made use of larger size orchestra and the harpsichord fell out of use and was replaced
by the piano (or fortepiano). Importance was given to instrumental music and sonata form
developed.
COMPOSERS OF CLASSICAL PERIOD
 Franz Joseph Haydn (Austrian) (1732 – 1809) was one of the most important figures in the
development of the Classical style of music during the 18th century. He helped establish the
forms and styles for the string quartet and symphony. Haydn was a prolific composer, and
some of his most well-known works are Symphony No. 92 in G Major, Emperor Quartet, and
Cello Concerto No. 2 in D Major. His compositions are often characterized as light, witty, and
elegant.
 The movie hit “Bird Box” features his composition Piano Sonata No. 47 in B Minor.
 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Austrian) (1756–1791) is widely recognized as one of the
greatest composers of Western music. He is the only composer to write and excel in all of the
musical genres of his time. Rumored to have had the ability to play music at age three and to
write music at age five. At the age of thirteen, he had written sonatas, concertos, symphonies,
religious works and operas.
 Notable compositions include The Marriage of Figaro, Elvira Madigan, and Clarinet Quintet in
A Major, K 581.
 Ludwig van Beethoven (German) (1770–1827) is widely regarded as the greatest composer
who ever lived. He expanded the Classical traditions of Joseph Haydn, one of his teachers, and
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and experimented with personal expression, a characteristic that
influenced the Romantic composers who succeeded him. Widening the scope of sonata,
symphony, concerto, and quartet, Beethoven’s notable works include Symphony No. 9 in D
Minor, Op. 125, Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67, Moonlight Sonata, and Für Elise.
 Characteristics of Beethoven’s works:
- His music veered toward larger orchestras.
- Sound was centered on the violas and lower registers of the violins and cellos to give his
music a darker mood.
- All themes in a piece are tied together by one motif.
- He developed musical themes and motifs extensively by means of modulation

commonly used as music to animated series of popular cartoon companies such as Looney
Toons, Wrner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Pixar, etc. Beethoven’s music was used in one of the
films for children and Little Einstein’s animated series also features the music of the great
composers.
 Alberti Bass - a special type of broken chord accompaniment where the chord is played in this
order: lowest note - highest note - middle note - highest note then repeats the pattern to create a
smooth, sustained, flowing sound

 Allegro - quickly, in a brisk lively manner

 Andante - in a moderately slow tempo
 Cadenza - an improvised passage or ornamentation performed by a soloist or group of soloists
that allows a display of virtuosity often placed near the end of a piece.

movements.
 Crescendo - gradually becoming louder
 Diminuendo - gradually becoming softer
 Homophonic - a melody accompanied by chords
 Largo - a very slow tempo.
 Minuet - a slow, stately ballroom dance for two in triple time.
 Rondo - a musical form that alternates the main theme and its contrasting themes usually
found in the final movement of a sonata or concerto
 Scherzo - a vigorous, light, or playful composition comprising a movement in a symphony or
sonata.
 Singspiel - 18th century German musical comedy featuring songs and ensembles interspersed
with dialogue.
 Theme and Variation - a musical form where the theme is presented in a simple unadorned
