SSS READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST => For Candidates ‘You are required to use in your design at least one of the three resistant materials covered in the syllabus. You are also required to apply at least one of the technological areas in the syllabus. You may, with guidance from your teacher, include other appropriate materials and technologies. ‘The design solution you develop in response to the project theme may be achieved in many different ways and may, for example, include technological principles like mechanical, frictional, magnetic, electrical, electronics, structural or combinations of these principles. ‘The Design Project is to be completed for submission to your teacher and you will be informed of the date of submission by your teacher. All work submitted is to be done by you. You are required to acknowledge any work done and contributions towards your project by any other party. For Teachers ‘Support given to candidates by the teacher through advice and guidance is critical throughout the project. Candidates are to exercise judgement and make personal decisions in the formulation and making of the ‘design. The practical work is to be that of the candidate under normal guidance of the teacher. Counselling will be necessary in helping candidates select projects suitable in scope and demand to their abilities. Candidates are to be made familiar with the scheme of assessment as detailed in the syllabus at the outset of the project. The ‘Teacher's Guide to Assessment’ in the syllabus should also be used to inform candidates of the various requitements for the assessment of the work. It should reflect your personal response to the design process of planning, research and exploration, formulation of brief and specifications, design proposals and ongoing evaluation. This may take the form of research materials, notes, doodles, sketches, calculations, decision making, etc. You are strongly discouraged from reworking your Journal for submission. Models and mock-ups may be included as part of your Design Journal where appropriate. Your Journal may consist of A3 size sheets that are securely fastened, A3 size sketch pads and models/ mock-ups, as appropriate. ‘Your Journal must include evidence of the following for the purpose of assessment. Planning and Monitoring Produce a plan for the execution of the Project that makes the best use of [10 marks} time and resources, taking into consideration testing, ongoing evaluation land changes made leading to the realisation of the artefact. The plan might be in the form of a time related diagram giving details of design stages for completion of the work in the given timeframe. Research ‘Seek out information from various resources, discriminating in the selection [20 marks] and use of information at various stages of design work to make informed decisions. Testing and evaluation through models and/or mock-ups, where appropriate, could form part of the investigative research. Idea Conceptualisation Record the investigations made and show an ability to conceptualise and and Development develop a design proposal thoroughly and thoughtfully. Evidence may be in [30 marks} the form of developmental sketches with appropriate annotations to capture the flow of ideas, and models or mock-ups where appropriate. GUOLES & MOE 2014 To51/0210RN14 3 Part B Final Presentation: Presentation Boards and Artefact The Final Presentation is to show the quality of your final design proposal in terms of its details, viability, innovativeness and desirability. You will be expected to demonstrate your graphic skills to communicate clearly the final design proposal through presentation boards. Workmanship and sensitive use of materials and appropriate construction methods will be demonstrated through the realisation of the final design proposal. The Final Presentation will include the made Artefact and a maximum of three A2 size single-sided boards. The Final Presentation must show evidence of the following for the purpose of assessment. Need Definition, Design State clearly the design need, design brief and specification resulting Brief and Specification _from investigative research of the given theme. [10 marks] Presentation Drawing Show the contextual use of the final design proposal using appropriate [15 marks] graphical techniques, Working Drawing Produce working drawings using proper conventions and standards. [15 marks} Artefact - Demonstrate an ability to manipulate materials sensitively and apply [30 marks] technologies, with accuracy of workmanship and quality of finish, Quality of Proposed Demonstrate originality and inventiveness in response to the aesthetic Design Solution and technical requirements of the design brief and specifications. You should establish the requirement to control items, situations or activities and pay attention as to how this might be achieved. You may interpret the theme as widely as you wish. To assist you, but not restrict your thinking, the following are given as examples of areas/activities where some form of control may be involved. Drawing Models Environment Plants Hazards Sound Machines Trattic Medical Valuables You are to identify a design need, want or opportunity that involves a personal response to the theme CONTROL for which, you are to design and make an artefact.
