Summary:
Indonesian patrol confronts Chinese ship in economic zone

On Friday night the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency detected the presence of Chinese
ships in Indonesian waters. The Indonesian ship then carried out a patrol that took three days to
confront the Chinese coast guard who claimed Indonesian sea territory.

The Chinese guard ship finally left the Natuna sea on Monday, 11:20 a.m. At a briefing
Tuesday, a spokesman for China's Sea ministry said there was nothing wrong with patrolling Chinese
vessels in the sea, as they thought the sea was part of China's "nine-dash line" territory.

China's "nine-dash line" describes its claim to almost the entire South China Sea. The ruling,
which came out at a 2016 international arbitration involving the Philippines, overturned most of
China's claims to the sea, but China has dismissed the ruling as bogus. Indonesia has no territorial
claim to the South China Sea, but part of the Indonesian Exclusive Economic Zone that includes
natural gas fields lies within China's "nine-dash line". Chinese ships regularly enter what Indonesia
calls the North Natuna Sea, causing tensions between the countries.

China in the past has also done so under the pretext of traditional fishing rights. China also
routinely patrols seas that do not belong to it, such as in Malaysia. According to research, China is
currently on the verge of collapse due to declining fish stocks due to overfishing and the destruction
of coral reefs, this makes China continue to take extreme measures.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia has communicated with the
Chinese Embassy in Jakarta to discuss this issue.
