LITERACY ASSESSMENT TOOL IN ENGLISH

I. ALPHABET KNOWLEDGE ( Letter Identification)


 Ask the learner to choose and read any 5 letters from the letter list.
 If he/she does not choose, then point letters for him/her to read..
 If he/she initially mispronounces the letter but corrects himself/herself
before continuing, the letter should be marked correct.
 If he/she struggles to read the letter (5 seconds silence is a good
indicator) or cannot recognize 4 out of 5 letters, mark the learner a
struggling reader.
 The assessment is finished.

II. WORD RECOGNITION (Most Used Words)


 Ask the learner to read the words in order, from left to right.
 Ask him/her to point the word as he/she read.
 If he/she initially mispronounce the word but corrects himself/herself
before moving on, the word should be marked correct.
 If he/she struggles to read any words for an extended period of time (5
seconds of silence is a good indicator) read the word for the learner then
ask him/her to read the next.
 If he/she is able to read below 5 words, mark the learner a poor reader.
 The assessment is finished.
