SW 2 – 1B MIDTERM EXAM
1. SOCIAL REALITIES
Social reality is distinct from biological reality or individual cognitive reality, representing as it
does a phenomenological level created through social interaction and thereby transcending individual
motives and actions. It can dictate how we view the world around us and, in turn, influence our choices
and decisions.
2. SOCIAL WELFARE
Social welfare refers to a wide range of activities and services by volunteers, non-profit
organizations and governmental agencies providing help to needy persons unable to care for
themselves; activities and resources designed to enhance or promote the well-being of individuals,
families and the larger community.
3. SOCIAL WORK
Social work is a practice-based profession that promotes social change, development, cohesion
and the empowerment of people and communities. Principles of social justice, human rights, collective
responsibility and respect for diversities are central to social work.
4. SOCIAL SERVICES
Social services are a range of public services intended to provide support and assistance towards
particular groups, which commonly include the disadvantaged. They may be provided by individuals,
private and independent organizations, or administered by a government agency.
5. SOCIAL ROLE
Social roles are a socially defined pattern of behavior that is expected of persons who occupy a
certain social position or belong to a particular social category.
6. FAMILY
The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society. It is a group of persons united
by the ties of marriage, blood, or adoption, constituting a single household and interacting with each
other in their respective social positions, usually those of spouses, parents, children, and siblings.
7. UNEMPLOYMENT
It the condition of one who is capable of working, actively seeking work, but unable to find any
work. It is important to note that to be considered unemployed a person must be an active member of
the labor force and in search of remunerative work.

9. LACK OF EDUCATION
Lack of education is the inability of people to acquire specialized skills, such as cognitive skills,
socialization, memorization of facts which are necessary for personal development and the
development of society and the world economy.
10. POVERTY
Poverty is the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material
possessions. Poverty is said to exist when people lack the means to satisfy their basic needs. In this
context, the identification of poor people first requires a determination of what constitutes basic needs.
ENUMERATION (7points)
The two methods in social work are the primary method and the secondary method. Under
primary method we have Social Casework, Social Groupwork, Community Organization. While the
secondary method includes Social Action, Social Welfare Administration, and Social Work Research.
