INSTRUCTION MANUAL
WARNING
Actual operations (such as key input and print) are executed by following the established procedures on the
Application Program (1), which is a proprietary program ISHIDA CO., LTD. designed.
The OS (2) has a role to perform the basic function (such as data management) when executing the Application
Program. The OS, unlike the Application Program, does not have to be exclusive to each product; rather it can
be commonly used to different products. For this reason, a commonly used OS is effective, and ISHIDA CO.,
LTD. use Windows XP Embedded. The following points need to be noted:
In case that the above four contents are not understood/accepted or followed, ISHIDA CO., LTD. may have to
ask to stop using the product.
The actual OS is built in the weigher. Therefore, the above four items are not to be infringed unless the product
is disassembled.

DANGER
• All electrical work for the installation site must be performed by licensed electrical contractors.
• All maintenance and inspection work involving electrical components must be performed by
qualified maintenance personnel.
Maintenance and inspection by the other personnel may result in electric shocks or malfunctions of
the machine.
• Even if the main power switch is turned OFF, some parts of the machine are energized at all times.
WARNING
• Ensure space around the machine installation location so that personnel or maintenance staff can
work safely.
• Never touch any electrical switches or buttons with wet or damp hands. Electrical shock may occur
when the equipment is not properly grounded or when there is electrical leakage.
• When operating the machine, the machine operators must have their long hair tied, and wear a cap,
appropriate clothes and shoes. Long hair or inappropriate clothes may be caught in the rotating parts
of the machine, which could cause injuries or unsanitary results.
• Before operating the machine, make sure that the cover of each part was attached. Contacting the
moving parts during operation may result in injuries.
• Do not touch the moving parts of the machine during operation. A sudden operation of the moving
parts may result in injuries.
• Do not remove the covers from the front and rear of the machine during operation. Failure to observe
this may result in electric shocks.
• Unless otherwise specified, turn OFF the main power switch when maintaining or inspecting the
machine.
After locking the main power switch, personnel must keep the key during maintenance or inspection.
Operation of the machine by the other person during work may result in electric shocks or injuries.
• When performing maintenance or inspection, wait for 3 minutes or more after the main power switch
was turned OFF. Even if the power was shut off, electrically charged parts remain inside the machine.
When other machines are connected before and after the process of this machine, turn OFF the power
to all of the machines to avoid electric shocks.
• This machine was designed with due consideration for sanitation; however, incorrect handling may
cause unexpected unsanitary results. Always keep the machine clean.
• If maintenance or inspection work is to be performed with the main power switch ON, clearly
indicate to the periphery that the machine is under maintenance or inspection in order to prevent the
machine from being operated inadvertently by the other person.
• Do not use the same outlet as this machine for any other equipment.
Failure to observe this may result in fire.
1-2
IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL 1 Safety
• When maintaining or inspecting the upper part of the machine, use an appropriate footstool or
stepladder to prevent personnel from falling down.
CAUTION
• For power sources connected to the machine, use a power supply voltage specified in the machine
specification and the rating plate on the machine.
Failure to observe this may damage the machine.
• Do not place an object on the power cord or do not press it down with the machine.
Failure to observe this may break the power cord.
• Do not turn OFF the main power switch during operation except in an emergency. Failure to observe
this may result in deletion of the setting data and total data.
• Do not operate the machine leaving tools, etc. on the machine. Falling down of such tools into the

Precautions on installation
Installation location for this machine must satisfy the following conditions. Installation in the other
location may result in malfunctions of the machine.
• The machine cannot be installed in locations such as:
• Locations that contain lots of dust
• Locations that contain inflammable gases or vapors
• Locations that give out corrosive gasses or solutions
• Do not use this machine in an environment which contains chlorine ions or sulfate ions, which
corrode beryllium foil used in the X-ray tube and may damage the tube. Do not install the machine
in a location where seawater or a chlorine detergent could be scattered.
• This machine is a precision machine. Place it on a stable and level surface not subject to shocks and
vibrations. Shocks and vibrations may cause malfunctions or performance deterioration.
• An air inlet is provided for both sides and the rear side of the machine. To ensure ventilation, install
the machine so that the air inlet is at least 20 cm away from the peripheral wall. When ventilation
becomes worse, temperature inside the machine increases and the protection circuit activates, which
may stop the machine operation or degrade the machine performance.
Precautions on maintenance
• Excluding the inspection room, this machine does not have a waterproof and dripproof structure. Be
careful not to splash water and other liquids on the machine.
• Never modify this machine (including sheet-metal working and loosening or removing the screws).
If modified without permission, the product safety and performance cannot be guaranteed. Also,
modifications without permission may be against the law or cause X-ray leakage accidents. If screws
of the machine are loosened, immediately re-tighten them. Operation with the screws loosened may
cause X-ray leakage accidents.
• Never loosen the screws inside the machine or remove the X-ray generator. If the unit is not mounted
in a proper position, the direction of X-ray irradiation is changed, which may cause X-ray leakage
accidents or degrade the unit performance.
This unit contains high-voltage generating parts, where oil for electric insulation is filled up. Never
disassemble this unit or loosen the mounting screws. Failure to observe this may cause electric
shocks, oil leakage, malfunctions, and performance deterioration.
1-4
IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL 1 Safety
• Beryllium foil is used for the X-ray irradiation window. This machine is designed so that beryllium
cannot be touched unless disassembled; however, do not disintegrate or vaporize beryllium, or do
not touch it directly by hand. Touching beryllium by hand or inhaling it has a harmful effect on
human bodies.
• Regarding the scrapping method of this machine, be sure to consult with our service window.
• Do not connect devices other than those specified in this manual to the outlet and connector of the
machine.
• When the protective curtain is either rolled up, damaged, or loosen from the machine, press
on the operation panel to stop the X-ray irradiation. Continuing the operation may cause X-ray
leakage accidents.
• In opening the inspection room door, be sure to press to stop the X-ray irradiation. Before
cleaning the inspection room, be sure to turn OFF the machine power.
• The inspection room door weighs approximately 10 kg. When opening it, do not move the hand off
the door until it is opened completely. Failure to observe this may result in injuries or damage to the
machine. Also, use caution so that hands and fingers are not caught in the handle of the inspection
room door.
• Do not touch the interlock switch attached to the opening/closing part of the inspection room door.
This switch is interlocked with the door opening and closing. This is used to stop X-ray irradiation
in case the inspection room door was inadvertently opened during X-ray irradiation. Never depress
this switch by hand or fix it mechanically. If this is not observed, X-ray irradiation cannot be stopped
in case the inspection door was opened, which may cause X-ray leakage accidents.
• Do not touch the interlock switch for the protective curtain. This switch is interlocked with the
protective cover mounting. When the machine was started without mounting the protective curtain,
the machine is stopped without irradiating X-rays. Never deform this switch.

2 Introduction IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL
This machine detects foreign objects inside the inspection object by processing a transmission image
with five types of detection sensitivity (level 1 to level 5). The object size that can be sampled varies
according to the level.
For level 1 to level 4, various sized foreign objects can be sampled by processing a transmission image
with four types of detection sensitivity. Level 5 is used for further advanced inspection.
Detection sensitivity levels and their processing abilities are shown in the following table.
• Level 5 should be separately set up according to the properties of inspection objects. Before
setting up level 5, it is necessary to make sure that foreign objects were properly detected by
level 1 to level 4. For the level 5 setting, refer to "6.5.8.2 Sensitivity optimization".
Level 1 processing
In Level 1, foreign objects are sampled using an algorithm that can efficiently sample small size foreign
objects and foreign objects with large gray variations.

IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL 2 Introduction
This machine uses three types of mask methods. This section explains the processing method for each
mask.
Ignores inspection for a certain width around the perimeter of the inspection target.
Package
(Upper, lower, right, and left mask widths can be set up separately.)
Pattern Ignores the areas including inspection for images similar to the registered images after search.
In the brightness mask setting, the area can be expanded or reduced by eroding or dilating the inspection
target. When the inspection target was eroded, it may become impossible to detect small foreign objects
outside the inspection target.
The outside shape of the inspection area can be smoothed by setting the number of times that are eroded
and the number of times that are dilated to appropriate numeric values. However, if the number of times
that are eroded is set to the value other than 0, it may become impossible to detect foreign objects outside
the inspection target.
Inspection object threshold
Depending on the X-ray irradiation angle against the inspection object container, the edge of the
container may be strongly detected. The boundary level should be set up so that the part detected strongly
than actual is ignored depending on the X-ray irradiation angle.
Erosion width and dilatation width
When the reduction level was decreased to the extent that the inspection object container is not
erroneously regarded as a foreign object, it may become impossible to detect foreign objects to be
detected. At this time, settings are performed in order to mask the container section as a blind area.
The values to be set are erosion width and dilatation width.
For the area brighter than the inspection object threshold of the transmission image as a "background
area" and for the area darker than that as an "inspection object area," "a mask" means the area that gets
into the inspection object area from the boundary between two areas by the erosion width.
When the background area exists between the container and the contents and the contents are covered
with the mask area as a result of masking the container, erode the inspection object area temporarily and
eliminate the background area between the container and the contents. Then, set up the dilatation width.
• The erosion width and dilatation width can be set up by ±1.6 mm Only the inspectable range
is displayed on the screen.
As the erosion width or dilatation width increases, it takes longer time to process the image.
As a result, the inspection speed in the snap mode or conveyor speed in the continuous mode
may be restricted.

In this mask method, the image pattern of the area to be excluded from inspection is saved in the
machine. Then, the machine checks whether the transmission image obtained from inspection is similar
to the saved image pattern. If a similar pattern was searched, the area is excluded from inspection.
This method is mainly used to prevent certain image characterizing portions in the transmission image,
e.g., swaged parts at both ends of a sausage, from being falsely detected.

IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL 2 Introduction
There are three kinds of image modes: "snap mode," "semi-continuous mode," and "continuous mode."
Snap mode
In the snap mode, inspection objects are inspected one by one. Imaging is performed only while the
inspection object is passing on the line sensor position, and the obtained image is processed and
inspected immediately after the object passed through. After the inspection is completed, the machine
waits for the next inspection object.
Timing for starting external output of the inspection result is immediately after the inspection object
passed through the line sensor position. The maximum length of the inspection object in the flow
direction should be 450 mm or less and the intervals between inspection objects should be 30 mm or
more.
If an optional object sensor is mounted to the machine, it is possible to detect where the inspection object
is located. This sensor is used for inspecting thin objects that are difficult to detect their location.
Conveyor
Inspection object
Semi-continuous mode
In the semi-continuous mode, imaging is continuously performed while the conveyor is moving,
regardless of whether an inspection object is present or not. When the conveyor goes forward by a certain
length, the image within that zone is subjected to inspection processing in block.
This mode is used when intervals between inspection objects cannot be ensured even if they are
individual packages or when it is impossible to detect a location of inspection objects.
Continuous mode
In the snap mode or semi-continuous mode, inspection objects of which X-ray transmission image is
very bright may not be recognized as inspection objects and the X-ray transmission image may not be
displayed. In such cases, the continuous mode is recommended.
2-23
2 Introduction IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL
There are two functions for adjusting the image contrast, "Dark enhanncement" and "Image enhance".
"Analog processing is performed in "Dark enhanncement" and digital processing in "Image enhance".
By adjusting the image contrast using the Dark enhancement, brightness of the dark area in the
transmission image is adjusted and then it becomes easy to detect foreign objects. For inspection objects
in which foreign objects are difficult to detect only by adjusting the contrast using "Image
enhance" (e.g., thick products such as canned food and block meat), contrast adjustment by "Dark
enhancement" is particularly effective.

2-24
IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL 2 Introduction
Set up these items to enhance the contrast for the area to be especially inspected with high sensitivity.
Foreign objects on the enhanced gray area can be detected with high sensitivity.
However, contrast on the gray area away from the enhanced gray area is reduced. Sensitivity for foreign
objects on the reduced gray area may be decreased. To prevent this, it is necessary to make a setting so
that appropriate contrast can be ensured for the whole gray area to be inspected.
2-25
2 Introduction IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL
TIP
• This setting is used to inspect products with
thickness. Contrast for the relatively dark area of
the original image is enhanced and foreign
objects on the area can be detected with high
sensitivity. However, contrast for the bright area
is reduced and thus sensitivity on the area is Fig. 2-25 enhancement graph
decreased.
2. Moderate enhancement
When the Enhance area is set to 30 and enhance
level is to 3, contrast for approximately 30%
brightness is tripled. The inspection object
becomes brighter and the gray variation of
foreign objects is increased. Thus, foreign
objects can be detected more easily.
2-26
IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL 2 Introduction
2. Moderate enhancement
When the Enhance area is set to 0 and enhance
level to 5, the gray scale of the inspection object
becomes bright, because the density of
margarine is relatively high. As a result, the
gray variation of foreign objects is increased
and foreign objects can be detected more easily.
2-27
2 Introduction IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL
By setting the enhance limit in addition to dark enhancement and image enhance, the dark area can be
enhanced clearly while maintaining the gray variations on the bright area.
2-28
IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL 2 Introduction
This section describes the details of the weight estimation function and manner of operation for
increasing the precision of this function.
A function to estimate the weight of inspection objects is provided as one of the function for the missing
item inspection.
Using this function, a special imaging process is given to the X-ray transmission image and the weight
is estimated from the brightness of the obtained image. It is possible to not only estimate the total weight
of the whole inspection object but also estimate the weight of the individual object among several
inspection objects packaged together.
• Before using the weight estimation function, it is necessary to set up "X-ray power", "Dark
enhancement" and "Image enhance" and then make the machine learn the relationship
between the inspection object image and weight according to the procedure of "Weight
estimate optimization" for auto set.
For the operation procedure of weight estimate optimization, refer to "6.5.8.3 Weigher
function optimize."
2-29
2 Introduction IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL
• The weight is the value estimated from the brightness of the X-ray transmission image. It is
not the value measured by a measuring instrument.
• Do not use the weight estimated by this machine for the purpose of official management.
• When the setting contents that can affect the brightness of the "X-ray power", "Dark
enhancement", and "Image enhance" images were changed, perform the weight estimate
optimization again to make the machine retry learning.
• For a thick inspection object or when objects with remarkably different density are mixed on
the same image as in a canned food (food and metal), the weight may not be estimated.
• The estimated weight for the individual object is calculated only from the image of the
individually separated inspection object area.
The total weight is estimated from the image on the whole screen. Because the areas out of
the range specified for the individual weight are included in calculating the "sum of the
individual weights" is not equal to the "total weight."
2-30
IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL 2 Introduction
Perform "Weight estimate optimization" for auto set. (For the operation procedure, refer to " 6.5.8.3
Weigher function optimize."
In weight estimate optimization, take images of a single sample of which weight is already known for
10 times.
At this time, intentionally produce an overlap, unbalanced state, etc., take images under various
conditions, and make the machine learn them
• If optimization is performed using 10 images taken under similar conditions, the estimated
value may not be calculated accurately when inspection objects with different conditions are
inspected.
Referring to the following examples, take images of the inspection object after producing various
conditions.

2 Introduction IX-G Series INSTRUCTION MANUAL
In the following cases, the inspection is impossible. The machine suspends processing for the
immediately preceding inspection object that was regarded as NG and performs processing for a newly
obtained transmission image.
In this case, a message is displayed on the screen and an NG signal is output.

If several NG factors occurred simultaneously, the factor with highest priority is displayed as the
inspection result according to the above list of priorities, and the corresponding NG signal is output.
For example, "Foreign object," "Missing item," and "Metal detect" occurred simultaneously, "Foreign
object," which is the highest priority, is displayed as the inspection result. Then, the corresponding NG
signal is output.
Note that it is possible to give the highest priority to "Metal detect" or "External NG" (higher priority
than "Test"). If you prefer this setting, contact our customer service window.

Weight estimation
As one of the functions for the missing item inspection, a function to estimate the weight of an inspection
object is provided.
By using this function, a special image processing is performed on the inspection result image and the
weight is estimated from the brightness of the obtained image.
In addition to the estimation of the total weight of the whole inspection object, the weight of the
individual inspection object among the several inspection objects packaged together can be estimated if
the area can be separated on the image.
• To use the weight estimation function, it is necessary to perform the auto set and then make
the machine learn the relationship between the inspection object image and weight. After
setting "X-ray power", "Dark enhancement", and "Image enhance", make the machine learn
the relationship between the inspection object image and weight according to the procedure
of "Weight optimize" for auto set.
• The estimated weight is a value calculated from the brightness of the inspection result image,
which is different from the actual measured weight.
Do not regard it as a regal proper weight.
• When objects with remarkably different density are mixed on the image, in an inspection of
objects composed of both metal and food such as a canned food, for example, the weight
cannot be estimated accurately.

Total data
For each product type that was inspected, the number of inspection targets from which no foreign object
was detected (OK count) and the number of foreign object detections (NG count) are counted and
displayed.
The total results including the total number of inspected presets, NG contents and foreign object
detection factors can be displayed, printed, or saved.
OK count
The OK count refers to the number of inspection objects from which no foreign object was detected.
However, the number cannot be counted correctly in the following cases:
• The inspection objects are not aligned, and the intervals are narrow and irregular.
• In the continuous modes (semi-cont/cont)
NG count
For the NG count, the number of screens from which "foreign objects were detected" as a result of image
processing by the machine is counted. Even if several foreign objects were detected on a single screen,
it is counted as a single detection.
• The maximum display value is "999,999." If the value exceeds this, the number is
automatically reset to 0.
• The total data is independently managed for each preset.
The inspection results for each preset are stored until the power to the machine is turned OFF.
Thus, it is possible to select the preset and print it or save the digital data at a later time.

7 MACHINE MAINTENANCE
7 Machine Maintenance
If the machine is operated when the conveyor remains dirty, foreign objects will be
falsely detected, which results in inaccurate inspection. Even if dirt is indistinctive,
be sure to clean the belt at least once a week.
The inspection room door weighs approximately 10 kg. Open it slowly with both
hands. Do not release the hands from the door until it is fully opened. Release of
hands while opening the door may result in injuries or damage to the machine.
When closing the inspection room door, lift up the door with both hands and push it
until a click is heard. Release the hands after making sure that the inspection room
door was locked. If the door is not locked, the door may fall forward, which could
result in injuries.
Do not fold the protective curtain. It contains lead. Use of the folded protective
curtain may result in X-ray leakage accidents.
When washing inside of the inspection room with water, be sure to use running water
of 50 °C or less. When dirt cannot be removed, wipe it off with a soft cloth or use
ethanol.
Do not use boiling water or steam. Otherwise, vapors enter into the machine, which
may result in failures.
For cleaning of the inspection room, wipe the room using a cloth moistened with a
designated cleaning solvent (neutral detergent) and then wipe it using a cloth
moistened with water. Do not use cleaning solvents such as hypochlorous acid.
Do not use cleaning solvents such as hypochlorous acid, which may damage the line
sensor part (black resign part of the line sensor cover).
Do not use organic solvents, which may damage the machine.
For the procedure of conveyor belt cleaning, refer to "7.2.2 Cleaning of conveyor."

After washing each part with water, be sure to wipe off water droplets before
mounting. Starting the machine mounted by any part without removing water
droplets may cause the conveyor belt to run idle, which could damage the machine.
After washing the air filter with water, be sure to dry it before mounting. If it is
mounted under a moistened state, water enters into the machine, which may result
in failures. When drying the filter, let it dry naturally without exposing it to the direct
sunlight.
IP66 (only for the inspection room)
• It prevents dust from entering into the machine.
• It can withstand water spray of 100 liters per minute 2.5 to 3 m away from all directions by a nozzle of
12.5 mm in inner diameter. (JIS C 0920)
• Wash it with water of 50 °C or less in temperature.
