MINDORO
MINDORO
• Is the seventh-largest
island in the Philippines.
It is located off the coast
of Luzon, and northeast
of Palawan. The southern
coast of Mindoro forms
the northeastern
extremum of the Sulu
Sea.
MINDORO

• In past times, it has been called Mai or Mait by Chinese traders and,
by Spaniards, as Mina de Oro (meaning “mine of gold”) from where
the island got it’s current name.

• The principal language in Mindoro is Tagalog, although in some parts


it has been greatly in uenced by the native Visayan and Mangyan
languages.

• Hanunó’o language is a language spoken by Mangyans in the


province of Mindoro in the Philippines

• “Home of the
Indigenous Mangyans”.
It’s capital is Mamburao
and occupies the
western half of the
island of Mindoro

the island and the provincial
capital.

VOCAL MUSIC

• Igway - is the word for their song

• Marayaw - is a spirit song. It is utilized for healing the


sick and for casting magical spells.

• Pamuybuyen - is a legend which means “ fear of water”

• Ambahan - a chanted poem with seven lines. A


serenade or courtship song.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

• Gitgit - is a three string


indigenous violin with
human hair for strings.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

• Kalutang - is a percussion
instrument. The sticks are
played in pairs to produce
harmonies on seconds,
thirds and fourths.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

• Batiwtiw - It is played by
striking the split end of a
bamboo against the left
palm.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

• Kinaban - is a jaw harp


instrument which is made
of slim bamboo. It is
approximately a ball pen
size of varying lengths
and shapes.

• Kudlong - is a boat
shaped string instrument.

• Lantoy - it is a
transverse ute. It
has 5 holes and it is
tuned diatonically.

• Agung - Used as an
ensemble by the
Hanunuo. It consist
of two light gongs.
It is played by 2
men squatting on
the oor.

PALAWAN

• Palawan is the largest island of the


p ro v i n c e o f Pa l a w a n i n t h e
Philippines and fth-largest by
area and tenth-most populous
island of the country, with a total
population of 994,101 as of 2020
census. The north west coast of the
island is along the South China
Sea, while the south east coast
forms part of the northern limit of
the Sulu Sea.

MUSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

• Sounds of nature is important to the people of Palawan


(chirping birds, sounds of insects, sounds of the wind and
rain).

• Their music imitates the sounds of animals.

• Makes use of different musical forms like repetitions and


syncopations.

VOCAL MUSIC - PALAWAN


TYPES OF VOCAL MUSIC

• Lantege - is a love song of the Tagbanuas and people of


Palawan.

• Kingking Tarinting Layang

A. Pasiyak - is an example of Cuyunon traditional folksong.

B. Tarinting - is a kind of bird usually found in the sea shore.

• Aruding - is a Jew’s
harp, also known as
the “speaking
instrument”

A. Suling
• a ute made of
bamboo.
• It can be tuned into
different scales.
• It is also known as
Babarak in Palawan.

• Pagang - is played
like a harp. It is
believed that only
the adult members
of the community
can play it.

• Kusyapi - it is a lute
instrument.
