Leaners at Mandedza High School are able to list items used to pay tribute in Mutapa State but
they are unable to identify these items. Therefore learners are tasked to collect various items used
to pay tribute in Mutapa State.

Introduction

Tribute is a payment in money or other valuables made by subjects or one ruler or nation to
another or a King in acknowledgment of submission or as the price of protection or security.

Tribute payment was another economic activity in the Mutapa State. The subjects could pay 
tribute to the King in form of cattle, beads, bangles, gold and grains. The payment of tribute to 
the Mutapa was a sign of loyalty. Most tribute was kept and recorded by the secretary of the
state called Ambuya mazvarira.
