Q3W5 Math 7 - Tuesday 22 February
7.EE.B.4.A — Solve word problems leading to equations of the form px + q = r and p(x + q) = r, where p, q, and r are speci c
rational numbers. Solve equations of these forms uently. Compare an algebraic solution to an arithmetic solution, identifying
the sequence of the operations used in each approach. For example, the perimeter of a rectangle is 54 cm. Its length is 6 cm. What
is its width?
Criteria for Success
1. Understand that an equation is a statement of balance, and in solving the
equation, the balance must be maintained.
2. Understand solving an equation as a process of undoing operations using
inverse operations that adhere to arithmetic properties.
3. Write and solve equations in the forms px + q = r and p ( x + q ) = r to represent
word problems
4. Solve equations using different approaches, including arithmetic approach and
algebraic approach.
5. Understand that p ( x + q ) = r can be solved in two
different ways
Classwork Problem 1a
Kevita and Mary write the equation 0.5 ( x + 8 ) = 6.50 to represent the situation, where x
represents the number of ounces of M&Ms.
● Kevita says that to solve this equation, you first distribute the 0.5 through the parentheses to
get 0.5x + 4 = 6.50.
● Mary says that to solve this equation, you first divide by 0.5 on both sides to get x + 8 = 13
Do you agree with either Kevita or Mary? Why? Finish solving the problem to find out how many
ounces of M&Ms Kevita put in her bag of candy..
Target Task 1
Solve each equation for the variable. Show every step in your work that
maintains balance in each equation.
Yes - however, tomorrow is the MAP test for Math and
it is important to rest so you can focus well on the test.
No extra practice today :-)
