What is TRIZ?
TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) includes a practical methodology, tool sets, a
knowledge base, and model-based technology for generating innovative solutions for
problem solving. It is useful for problem formulation, system analysis, failure analysis, and
patterns of system evolution. There is a general similarity of purposes and methods with the
field of pattern language, a cross discipline practice for explicitly describing and sharing
holistic patterns of design.

TRIZ of Examples :
Example 1: Upside down bottle of honey
Tukai purchased the bottle of honey only recently. I was thoroughly taken aback to see it placed
upside down on the tray. Then I noticed the printed label on the bottle. The printing is on the
upward direction only. That must mean that the bottle has been designed just that way to be placed
bottom up, I concluded.

What would be the advantage?

Very simple. It has always been a problem that you couldn't get the last few drops of a thick liquid in
the bottle however much you try.

Upside down, there is no visible trace of honey at the empty top. Honey being heavy, it finally
accumulates over the cap at the bottom.

The cap is specially designed to release controlled drops of honey with each squeeze.

At what cost?

That's the beauty of inventive design, additional cost is nearly nil.

We'll now examine in details how a designer might finally arrive at the inventive solution to a
problem on the basis of not one but two inventive principles, the main one being Other way round
principle.
Improving feature: #23 loss of material

Preserving feature: #12 shape

TRIZ Solution : #29 pneumatics and hydraulics : Use gas and liquid parts of an object instead of solid
parts (e.g. inflatable, filled with liquids, air cushion, hydrostatic, hydro-reactive).
• Comfortable shoe sole inserts filled with gel
• Store energy from decelerating a vehicle in a hydraulic system, then use the stored energy to
accelerate later.

# 35 parameter changes : Change an object's physical state (e.g. to a gas, liquid, or

solid.)
• Freeze the liquid centers of filled candies, then dip in melted chocolate, instead of handling the
messy, gooey, hot liquid.
• Transport oxygen or nitrogen or petroleum gas as a liquid, instead of a gas, to reduce volume.

# 3 local quality : Change an object's structure from uniform to non-uniform, change

an external environment (or external influence) from uniform to non-uniform.
• Use a temperature, density, or pressure gradient instead of constant temperature, density or
pressure.
# 5 merging : Bring closer together (or merge) identical or similar objects, assemble
identical or similar parts to perform parallel operations.
• Personal computers in a network
• Thousands of microprocessors in a parallel processor computer
• Vanes in a ventilation system
• Electronic chips mounted on both sides of a circuit board or subassembly

Example 2. Solving a real-life problem inventively without being aware of the

inventive principles used: Piercing cap on a tube of cream
Years back when I screwed open the cap on a tube of cream medicine, I found that the mouth of the
tube is protected by a thin metal cover.

Well then, I need something sharp to pierce a hole in the protective metal cover, I thought.

Then accidentally I noticed the cap. What is this protrusion at the back of the cap?

Can I make the hole with it?

Turning the cap around I tried to screw the cap using its opposite end. It fitted perfectly on the
mouth of the tube and better still it had screw threads on its head end also. I screwed the cap tight
using its head end.

Yes, the protrusion had made a perfectly round hole at the center of the metal cover just as I
expected.

Improving feature: # 39 productivity

Preserving feature: #6 area of stationery

TRIZ Solution: #10 preliminary actions : Perform, before it is needed, the required change of an
object (either fully or partially).
• Pre-pasted wall paper
• Sterilize all instruments needed for a surgical procedure on a sealed tray.

#35 parameter changes : Change an object's physical state (e.g. to a gas, liquid, or
solid.)
• Freeze the liquid centers of filled candies, then dip in melted chocolate, instead of handling the
messy, gooey, hot liquid.
• Transport oxygen or nitrogen or petroleum gas as a liquid, instead of a gas, to reduce volume

#17 another dimension : To move an object in two- or three-dimensional space.

• Infrared computer mouse moves in space, instead of on a surface, for presentations.
• Five-axis cutting tool can be positioned where needed.

#7 nested doll : Place one object inside another; place each object, in turn, inside the
other.
• Measuring cups or spoons
• Russian dolls
• Portable audio system (microphone fits inside transmitter, which fits inside amplifier case)

Example 3: Contradiction: If apply a natural fibre composite layering of Full

Maintenance Lease as car front hood.
Then weight reduction of the vehicle could be achieved.

But the shape at the impact point can be deformed due to ability of the structure to absorb the
impact energy during collision.

Improving feature: #1 weight of moving object

Worsening feature: #12 shape

TRIZ solution principles: #10 preliminary action : Perform, before it is needed, the required
change of an object (either fully or partially).
• Pre-pasted wall paper
• Sterilize all instruments needed for a surgical procedure on a sealed tray.

#35 parameter changes : Change the temperature.

• Raise the temperature above the Curie point to change a ferromagnetic substance to a
paramagnetic substance.
• Raise the temperature of food to cook it. (Changes taste, aroma, texture, chemical
properties, etc.)
• Lower the temperature of medical specimens to preserve them for later analysis.

#40 composite materials: Change from uniform to composite (multiple)

materials.
• Composite epoxy resin/carbon fiber golf club shafts are lighter, stronger, and more flexible
than metal. Same for airplane parts.
• Fiberglass surfboards are lighter and more controllable and easier to form into a variety of
shapes than wooden ones.

#14 spheroidality curvature : Instead of using rectilinear parts, surfaces,

or forms, use curvilinear ones; move from flat surfaces to spherical ones; from parts shaped
as a cube (parallelepiped) to ball-shaped structures.
• Use arches and domes for strength in architecture

Example 4: If you’ve been using your laptop for a while, you might have noticed instances
of slowdown or random blue screens, or rebooting. This can be caused by a number of
problems, but it can very likely be a case of your laptop overheating. As laptops have gotten
portable, more compact and slimmer, components are now closely fitted into small chassis.
This means little space for airflow. A laptop that doesn’t see maintenance and clean-ups
often is going to overheat.

Improving feature : #17 temperature

Preserving feature: #39 productivity

TRIZ Solution: #15 dynamics: Allow (or design) the characteristics of an object, external
environment, or process to change to be optimal or to find an optimal operating condition.
• Adjustable steering wheel

#28 mechanics substitution : Replace a mechanical means with a sensory (optical,

acoustic, taste or smell) means.
• Replace a physical fence to confine a dog or cat with an acoustic *fence* (signal audible to
the animal).
• Use a bad smelling compound in natural gas to alert users to leakage, instead of a
mechanical or electrical sensor.
#35 parameter change: Change the temperature.

Example 5: Railways are vital to modern cities. As transport arteries they allow greater numbers
of people to live in concentrated areas, and help to reduce congestion and pollution generated by
travelling on our roads.

Beyond the irritation of the noise (which for most residents, based on the distance they will be from
the track, will sit between the noise of a hair dryer and the sound on the ground of a busy road), is
the far more substantial problem of vibrations created by trains. People feel them, and will typically
learn to tune them out, but over the longer term these vibrations will cause structural problems to a
building, and these can be expensive to repair. The final impact of this is that areas around trains
tend to have lower land values and generate more complaints by residents. It can also limit the
developments that can be executed.

Improving feature: #13 stability

Preserving feature: #9 speed

TRIZ Solution: #33 homogeneity: Make objects interacting with a given object of the same
material (or material with identical properties).
• Make the container out of the same material as the contents, to reduce chemical
reactions.
#15 dynamics: Allow (or design) the characteristics of an object, external
environment, or process to change to be optimal or to find an optimal operating condition.
• Adjustable steering wheel

#28 mechanics substitution: Replace a mechanical means with a sensory (optical,

acoustic, taste or smell) means.
• Replace a physical fence to confine a dog or cat with an acoustic *fence* (signal audible to
the animal).
• Use a bad smelling compound in natural gas to alert users to leakage, instead of a
mechanical or electrical sensor.

#mechanical vibration: Cause an object to oscillate or vibrate.

• Electric carving knife with vibrating blades
