Agriculture and Climate Change

1. The CO2 builds up and cause there to be a blanket of gas preventing the heat on Earth from
escaping to space and instead it traps heat on Earth. This warms up our planet and causes the
global temperature to rise.

2. CO2 is said to help crops in the process of photosynthesis. Since there is more CO2, crops
grow better and are able to need less water to be sustained.

3. For some crop fields, the increase of CO2 is extremely damaging to the crops and for other
fields, the crops benefited from the CO2 since with the increased amount of CO2, the crops were
able to stay alive with less water.

4. Yes, there are regions in the world where crops would grow better under future climate
change. The crop water production increases in areas of both a warmer climate and increased
CO2 in the air.

5. Crops go through photosynthesis. In order to do photosynthesis crops, need CO2 from the air
and also water. Since the amount of CO 2 in the air has increased, the process of photosynthesis
is done more quickly which caused there to be less of a need for water.

6. a. Other than precipitation, another factor that might change the amount of water is available
to a plant is if they are being watered manually or not. Many farmers water they are crops for
they don’t have to wait for rain.

b. Farmers are needing to water their crops less and less due to climate change.
