MECHANICS OF DEFORMABLE BODIES - CIE 113

P1
MODULE #1: INTRODUCTION TO STRESSES

Deformable bodies – it will not retain its shape/form once a load(external/internal) is applied
onto it.
FOUR TYPES OF FORCES:
1. Normal force – a force that applied perpendicular to a cross sectional area of the body.
2. Shear force – a force that applied parallel to the cross section.
3. Twisting moment/Torque- it tends to twist, rotate the cross-sectional area of the body.
4. Bending moment- it tends to bend the body.
Centroidal (Axial) Loading – when the loading is uniform, its resultant passes through the
centroid of the loaded area.
p=PA
Axially loaded -means that the force, P, acts, on the centroid of the object.

Normal stress formula:

P
σ=
A
σ =normal stress
P= normal force
A = cross sectional area
