Introduction
This project is your starting assignment for geography. At the end of the project you

you will be able to make an awesome final product.

During this project you will learn many new words. To learn these words quicker we
will work with a word list. On this list you will write the words you do not know in
English and look them up in Dutch. Please look at the last page to see.

Let practice!!
- What word did you not know yet? Please underline this word in the text above.
- Write this word in your word list and either look the word up yourself or ask
your teacher.

The project
Before we can make this perfect island we need to learn more stuff.
What will you learn?
- What should be on a map.
- How to use, read, and make a legend.
- How to use a scale.

1. Maps

1.1 Types of maps

Use your course book to find out what these words mean:

A Thematic map is…………………………………………………………………………..

2. Scale
How to work with Scale?

On a map there is a scale (NL: …......................). We use a scale to show us

how big or small things are on the map. You can find it above or under a map.
A scale mostly looks like this:

Measure (NL: …................) how long the distance (NL: …......................) is

from point A to point B. Next you look how many cm the scale is.

On this scale a distance from 5 centimeter on the map is in real life 10 kilometer.

How do I know how far away something is?

The scale tells you how much kilometer or meter only 1

centimeter on the map is. You will have to multiply (NL:
vermenigvuldigen) the centimeters with the number of the
scale.

Example
On a map you see the number 1: 25 000
On this map you see the distance between two places is 5
centimeter.

Calculate (NL: bereken) the distance like this:

5 x 25 000 = 125 000 centimeter.

125 000 centimeter is 1 250 meter, or 1,25 kilometer!

TASK 2 - Let’s try!

The scale of the map is 1: 100 000.

a. How many centimeters is 1 centimeter on the map in real life?

b. Try to complete the table

b. What is the biggest scale you can find? 1 : ……………………………

3. Legend
TASK 3 – symbols

Did you ever look at a map and saw many colors and symbols (NL:
…................) What did you do to understand them?

Every good map has a legend (NL:…......................) or map key. It

shows people which color or symbol means what.

Let’s try!
a. Color the Mountains BROWN Color the ocean BLUE
Color the capital cities RED Color the forests GREEN

b. Now think of 5 more symbols and draw them here. Give every symbol a
different color. Don’t forget to draw the symbols on the map above too!
