CA2 Productive People: Time Management

Pre-task

Start by doing the self-correcting exercises which you can find in the classroom in the
Resources section Productive People: Time Management. You can find the Resources
section in the top right corner of the classroom. As you are working through the exercises,
take note of any new language you learn. You will need this to prepare the Tasks below.

When you have finished, share one thing that you have learnt from these resources (e.g.
vocabulary, expressions or grammar) to the I have learnt something today folder in the
Forum.

Task 1

In this task, you must record a video (not an audio) on your mobile phone
welcoming new students to the UOC and giving them advice.

Mentors wanted

We need your help! As a UOC student, you understand the ups and downs of studying online
and your experience has provided you with wisdom about this campus. We would like you to
share this wisdom with new students at the UOC. How will you welcome them? What tips can
you share to make their UOC experience a great one? How do you deal with matters like
tech trouble, motivation, organising your schedule, communication, your health and
well-being, and study-life balance?

Record a video contribution of 1 - 2 minutes, and follow these steps:

1. Introduce yourself;

2. Give the new students some tips to help them succeed at the UOC, and say how these
strategies have helped you;

3. End by wishing the new students well with their studies.

Then, upload your video to Langblog.

Remember: Your recording should be spontaneous and natural. Speak to the camera as if
you were speaking directly to the students you are welcoming. If you do not make eye
contact, or if your pronunciation or intonation is unnatural (e.g., if you are reading from a
script), your mark will be lowered.

RECORDING IN LANGBLOG

● You should record this video on your mobile phone and then upload the file to
Langblog.*
● In Langblog, you will need to comment on your teacher’s video in order to upload
yours. Go to Post a Contribution. Click on Add or Record Media. Then, select Upload
Video.
● After you post your recording, make sure you check that your video has worked.

*If you are not able to record on your phone, you can use your PC/laptop but make sure that
you maintain eye contact with the camera as much as possible, as though you are talking
directly to the students.

LANGUAGE FOCUS

For this task, you will need to use the following structures from the CA 2 Resources: first
and second conditionals (3.01-3.04) and language for giving advice (4.02).

ORIGINALITY OF YOUR WORK

You may prepare some notes but you must use your own words and you must not read
directly from a prepared script, from the Internet or a book as that is considered to be
plagiarism. For more information, see the section on plagiarism in the Course Plan.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Task 2

Q & A (LANGBLOG)

Watch at least two of your classmates’ videos and think about them carefully as you listen.
Think of a question to ask them about what you’ve heard. Then post your response to them
in Langblog either as a video or as an audio file.

You can ask questions about the content of their talks or ask them to clarify something you
didn’t understand.

Feel free to continue responding to your classmates in a dialogue!

REFLECT IN ENGLISH (FORUM)

Reflect on the point below and post your response to the CA2_Bad_advice folder in the
Forum:

● What is one bad piece of advice you have received about any area of your life? Why
do you think it would be unrealistic or unwise for you to follow that advice?

3
CA2 Productive People: Time Management
Read your classmates’ posts and respond to one (or more) of them, relating their bad advice
to your own situation. Consider whether it would be good or bad for you to follow the advice
that is bad for them. Feel free to continue responding to one another in a dialogue!

Error correction exercise 1

Your teacher will post more information about this optional activity in the classroom.

Join a group!

For some parts of some activities in this course, you will need to hold a conversation with a
classmate in real time. Follow your teacher’s instructions and join a group during CA2 in
preparation for the next activity (CA3)!
