Introduction
1 The Origins of the Field Hockey Game

Hockey-like games involving sticks and balls have been played for thousands of
years. Historical records show that a crude form of hockey was played in Egypt
4,000 years ago, and in Ethiopia around 1,000 BC

Over the last 500 years, Soft Hockey has been played in India and has been one of
the most popular sports in the villages where there is no proper infrastructure to
cope with field hockey.

Hockey in England in the 17th and 18th centuries consisted of whole villages
playing the game with the objective of hitting the ball into the opposing villages'
common ground.

b The Rise of Professional Hockey:

(International Hockey Federation (F.I.H.))

Hockey was a strictly amateur affair until 1904 when the first professional league
was created - oddly enough in the United States.

That folded in 1907 and an even bigger league, the National Hockey Association
(NHA) emerged three years later.

Hockey In Olympic Games

The first Olympic Hockey Competition was held in London in 1908 with men's
teams competing and with England, Ireland, and Scotland competing separately.

India in Hockey Olympic Games

The men's team dominated the prestigious event in the early years, winning six
consecutive golds from 1928 to 1956. The Indian hockey men's team has won
Olympic gold medals added two more at Tokyo 1964 and Moscow 1980.

International Federation of Women’s Hockey Association

➢ Denmark joined in 1925, the Dutchmen in 1926, Turkey in 1927, and in 1928 -- the year of
the Amsterdam Olympics -- Germany, Poland, Portugal, and India joined. India's addition
marked the membership of the first non-European country.

➢ Hockey was played at the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 1998.

➢ The FIH not only regulates the sport, but is also responsible for its
development and promotion so as to guarantee a secure future for hockey.

The Men's Hockey Champions Challenge-I was an international men's field hockey
tournament, played every two years.

7 Hockey Champions Challenge II


The Men's and Women's Hockey Champions Challenge-II was an international field
hockey competition introduced by the International Hockey Federation in 2009.

8 Sultan Azalan Shah Hockey Tournament Men
The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is an annual invitational international men's field
hockey tournament held in Malaysia. It began in 1983 as a biennial contest.
