Requirements.

5.2.1 Magnetizing Equipment.

5.2.1.1 For the magnetization used an electromagnetic yoke of articulated legs.

5.2.1.2 Before use, the power of electromagnetic yoke lifting must be verified within the passage
of a year and each time the yoke has been damaged or repaired.

5.2.1.3 Each alternating current yoke must have a lifting power of at least 10 lb (45 N) at the
maximum pole spacing that will be used, according to E-709, Table 3.

5.2.1.4 Each direct current yoke must have a lifting power of at least 50 lb (225 N) at the
maximum pole spacing that will be used, according to E-709, Table 3.

5.2.2 Applicators of magnetic particles.

5.2.2.1 Dry way. -Plastic applicators should be used and they should be applied in such a way to
form a thin layer, even on the workpiece.

5.2.2.2 Wet way. -Use sprayers that provide complete coverage with a fine and uniform spray of
particles suspended in water or a light petroleum distillate. The functioning of particles
applicators must be checked periodically or whenever is suspected of a partial clogging of
the holes.

5.2.3 Magnetic field indicators (to check the magnetic flux).

5.2.3.1 Octagonal field (type cake) indicator.- An adequate field strength is indicated if a defined
line of magnetic particles forms across the face of copper of the indicator (the slots are
placed against the workpiece) when the particles are applied simultaneously with the
magnetizing force. When the particles line does not form clearly, magnetization technique
must be changed or adjusted. The best use of this indicator is with dry particles
procedures.

5.2.3.2 Lainas with artificial flaws. - Should be held to the surface to be inspected so that the side
of the artificial fault the laina this toward the surface to inspect. An adequate field strength
is indicated when a line (or lines) of magnetic particles are clearly defined on the face of the
laina when the magnetic particles are applied simultaneously with the magnetizing force.
When the particles line does not form clearly, magnetization technique must be changed or
adjusted. The best use of the indicator type laina is with wet particles procedures.
Use the type field flag cake or shims at the beginning and at the end of each inspection or
every eight hours for inspection.

5.2.4 Magnetic Particles.

The following materials should be used for the inspection by magnetic particles:
• MX-200: Magnaflux Fluorescent Dry Powder Orange color, or equivalent.
• 8A RED: Magnaflux Red Dry Powder, or equivalent.
• 3A BLACK: Magnaflux Black Dry Powder, or equivalent.
• 1 GRAY: Magnaflux Gray Dry Powder or equivalent.

• Dry magnetic particle 63 red Circle Systems or equivalent.
• Mi-Glow 820 Circle Systems or equivalent.
• Mi Glow 778 Circle Systems or equivalent.
• SC-925: Yellowish green Glo-Netic Fluorescent wet magnetic particle (spray) or equivalent.

5.2.4.1 Dry particles. -Dry magnetic powders are designed to be used as supplied and apply
sprinkling them directly on the surface of the part being inspected. Usually used as a
perishable material, though particles can be collected and reused. However, to maintain
control of the size of particles and of possible contamination, it is not usual collected and
become to use. Dry powders can also be used under extreme environmental conditions, it
does not affect them the cold, so it can perform the inspection at temperatures that can
thicken or freeze wet baths, are also resistant to heat; some powders can be used at
temperatures up to 600 ° f (315 ° C). Some colored organic coatings which are applied to
the particles to improve contrast lose their color at high temperatures, which makes the
contrast less effective. Fluorescent dry particles cannot be used at these high
temperatures, please consult the manufacturer about temperature constraints or tests that
must be done.

5.2.4.2 Wet Particles. - Wet magnetic particles are designed to be suspended in a vehicle such as
water or light distillate oil at a certain concentration to apply to the test surface by spraying
or draining. They exist in concentrated fluorescent and non-fluorescent. In some cases, the
manufacturer mix previously particles with the vehicle's suspension, but usually the
particles are supplied as a dry concentrate or paste, in which the user mixes with the
distillate or water. The suspension should be used as a disposable material.
5.2.4.3 Decanting tubes. -Tubes of decanting with 1 ml 0.05 divisions stem will be used ml to
fluorescent particles and an ear of 1.5 ml of 0.1 ml division’s for non-fluorescent particles.

5.2.4.4 Concentration. - Before taking the sample to measure the concentration, the suspension
should be shaken for at least 30 minutes on a stationary unit, manually by shaking the
container vessel, to ensure a homogeneous mixture. Take a portion of 100 ml of the
suspension and let that it seats 30 minutes for suspension base water and 60 minutes for
suspensions in light petroleum distillates. The volume of settlement is an indication of the
concentration of the bath.
Volume of settlement - For fluorescent particles, the volume should be 0.1 to 0.4 ml per
100 ml of suspension and 1.2 to 2.4 ml per 100 ml of suspension for non-fluorescent
particles, unless otherwise is specified by the manufacturer of particles. Verification of the
concentration must be done at least every 8 hours.

5.3 Lighting.
5.3.1 Visible magnetic particles. -The intensity of visible light on the surface that is to be inspected with
visible particles must be a minimum of 100 feet candela (1000 lux) to ensure an adequate
sensitivity during the test and evaluation of indications.
5.3.2 Fluorescent magnetic particle. -The test should be done in a darkened according to the following
area:
• The level of visible ambient light must not exceed 2 candles - foot (20Lx).
• The inspector must remain in the dark area at least 5 min prior to inspection to allow your vision
adapts to the dark. If the inspector used lenses, these should not be photosensitive.

• Black light lamp should be preheated for at least 10 minutes before use or measure its intensity.
Black light must reach a minimum of 1000 µW/cm² on the surface of the work piece to be inspected
during all the inspection.
• Filters should be checked and if necessary, be cleaned prior to use. Broken or fractured filters must
be replaced immediately.
• Black light intensity should be measured with a meter of black light prior to use, whenever the
power supply is interrupted or changed, and when the inspection or series of inspections is
completed.

• The light, both for visible light, such as fluorescent meters (black), should be calibrated at least
once a year or every time that the meter has been repaired. If the meters have not been used for a
year or more, the calibration must be before it is used.

5.4 Stages and areas of examination.

5.4.1 Examination stages and areas of interest to examine should be defined by the customer.

5.5 Development of the inspection.

5.5.1 Prior to inspection by magnetic particles, a verification of the surface of inspection should be to
locate any discontinuity open to the surface, which may not attract and keep the magnetic particles
due to its width.

5.6 Preparation of the surface.

5.6.1 Before each inspection magnetic particle, the weld bead and the adjacent area within at least 1
inch (25 mm) must be free of all dirt, fat fluff, scales, flux welding, spray welding, paint, oil, and any
other foreign material that could hide the openings to the surface or in any way interfere with the
inspection or dry.
5.6.2 The cleaning can be supplemented using detergents, organic solvents, solutions scale removers
and paint removers.
5.6.3 If the test is carried out with coatings (on painting) you should verify that the signs are detected
through the coating thickness maximum in a test tube with the same conditions present in the
piece.
5.7 Painting of Contrast.
5.7.1 To improve the contrast of color between the surface to examine and dry particles, apply a thin
layer of contrast paint industrially made for that purpose, of the mark Magnaflux (WCP-2), Met-L-
Check (WCP-81) or similar.

5.8 Technique of electromagnetic yoke.

5.8.1 Yokes are usually electromagnets in the shape of a "C", which induce a magnetic flux between the
Poles (legs) and are used for a local magnetization. Many portable yokes have articulated legs
(poles) that allow the legs fit for contact on uneven surfaces or for the contact of two surfaces that
meet at an angle.
5.8.2 The separation of the legs of the yoke should not exceed 6 pg. (152 mm). Shorter spacing can be
used to adapt to the geometric constraints of the area under inspection, but it is not recommended
to be less than 3 pg. (75 mm).
5.8.3 Type of magnetizing current-alternating or direct current electromagnetic yokes can be used.

5.9 Method of examination.

AREA: OPERATIONS TITLE: MAGNETIC PARTICLES EXAMINATION TO PRESSURE VESSELS

5.9.1 Dry particles. -The sequence of continuous operation of magnetization is subject, namely,
magnetizing current flow will be initiated before the application of dry particles and ended once the
implementation has been completed and the excess has been deleted.
5.9.2 Wet particles. -Magnetization current should be once the particles have been applied. The flow of
particles must be stopped with the implementation of the current. The humid particles in spray can
be applied before or after that the magnetizing current has been applied.
5.9.3 Examination coverage. - All inspections should be conducted with an overlap of at least 10% to
ensure 100% of the coverage required.
5.9.4 Direction of the magnetization. - Must be made at least two magnetizations separated
approximately perpendicular magnetic flux lines between if, for each area examined. For areas
where it may not obtained adequate field strength, be used an additional magnetic particle
technique to obtain the coverage required in two directions.
5.9.5 Direction of the magnetic field. - Direction of magnetization must be determined by the directions of
the magnetic particles obtained using the indicator or the shims.

5.10 Application of magnetic particles.

5.10.1Dry way. - Dry particles should be applied in such a way to form a coating thin and evenly on the
work piece, while the work piece is being magnetized. The dried particles cannot be applied to
damp surfaces. The most appropriate application technique is suspended particles in air, so these
from reaching the surface of the piece that be is magnetizing in the form of a uniform cloud and
with minimal force. Dry particles should not be emptied, disposed of or spreading with fingers on
the part to inspect.
5.10.2Wet way. - Wet, fluorescent, or not fluorescent, magnetic particles suspended in a vehicle at the
recommended concentration, can be applied by spray or flow over the areas to inspect. Since thin
or weak indications on polished surfaces can be cleaned or deleted, care should be taken to
prevent a flow of high speed on the surface criticisms and disrupt the implementation of the bath
before interrupting the magnetizing force.
5.10.3Removal of the excess of particles. - Accumulation of excess of dry particles in the inspection
should be stirred with a Jet light air the same applicator obtainable, syringe or another source of
dry air low pressure. Keep the magnetizing force while it removes the excess of particles.

5.11 Degaussing.
5.11.1 When the residual magnetism in the work piece may interfere with subsequent processes or
applications, the part or area examined should demagnetize is at any time upon completion of the
test. Unless specified otherwise by the customer, the residual magnetism should not be greater
than 3 Gauss.

5.12 Registrable indications.

5.12.1 Register all those indications that are out of acceptance in accordance with the acceptance
criteria set out in this procedure, unless the customer otherwise in written form.
5.12.2 The middle of permanent record should include the location, type, direction, length and spaces
between signs. Registration can be made by one or more of the following means:
• Drawing the indication as well as its location.
• Photographing the indications.

• Record in writing the location, length, orientation, and number of indications.
• By means of a tape transparent adhesive placing it directly on the (s) indication (s) and transport
in a white sheet to attach it to the reporting of results.
• Removable film. - Cover (s) indication (s) with a removable plastic film applied by spray to set
the directions, and then detach the film (s) indication (s) attached (s). Replicas obtained must be
attached to the report's findings.

5.13 Evaluation of indications.

5.13.1 All indications must be evaluated in terms of the criteria set out in this procedure.
5.13.2 The indications well be revealed by magnetic particle retention. All indications are not necessarily
imperfections; however, an excessively rough surface, changes in magnetic permeability (such at
the edge of the heat affected zone), surface irregularities due to uneven welding seam or other
surface condition can produce similar indications.
5.13.3 Are prohibited particle accumulations areas, these discontinuities may mask sings, which should
be cleaned and re-inspected.
5.13.4 The indication of a flaw may be longer than the imperfection caused, however, the indication size
is the base for the acceptance criteria. Only indications with dimensions greater than 1/16 pg.
(1.5mm) should be considered relevant.
5.13.5 An indication linear is that which has a length greater than three times its width.
5.13.6 A rounded indication is that circular or elliptical shape with a length equal to or less than three
times its width.
5.13.7 Any doubtful or questionable indication should be re-examined to determine whether or not it is
relevant.

5.14 Acceptance standard.

5.14.1 This standard of acceptance should apply, unless another stricter standard is specified.
5.14.2 All surfaces to be examined shall be free from:
• Relevant linear indications (more than 1/16 pg.).
• Relevant rounded indications greater than 3/16 pg. (4.8 mm);
• Four or more indications rounded relevant on one line separated by 1/16 pg. (1.5 mm) or less
from edge to edge.

5.15 Repair requirements.

5.15.1 Defect must be removed or reduce them to an acceptable imperfection size. Whenever a flaw is
repaired by carved or frosted, and is not required a subsequent repair by welding, the excavated
must be devastated in the surrounding surface and try to avoid sharp nicks, cracks, or corners.
When welding is required after the repair of a flaw, the area should be cleaned and welded in
accordance with a qualified welding procedure.
5.15.2 Treatment of indications which were taken as non-relevant. Any indication that has been taken
as not relevant should be considered an imperfection until is displayed by a re inspection by the
same method or by some other non-destructive method and/or surface conditions, that
imperfection is acceptable.
5.15.3 Inspection of the areas in which the imperfections have been removed. Once a defect has been
removed and before a repair welding, the area must be inspected by means of magnetic particles
or another suitable non-destructive method to ensure that they were removed or reduced to a size
of acceptable imperfection.

5.15.4 Re-inspection of the repaired areas. Once repairs have been made, the area must be devastated
in the surrounding surface and try to avoid sharp notches, cracks, or corners and re inspecting by
the method of magnetic particles and by all methods of inspection were originally required to the
affected area, except that the depth of the repair is less than the required radiographic sensitivity
the radiographic re-inspection may be omitted.

5.16 Clean up after the inspection.

5.16.1 Removal of particles. - Cleaning after the test is necessary when the waste of the magnetic
particles may interfere with subsequent processes of parts or service requirements. The customer
must specify when cleaning or its extension is required.
5.16.2 Removal of particles. - The techniques of inspection after cleaning are:
• The use of compressed air to blow out the unwanted dry magnetic particles.
• Drying of the magnetic particles in suspension (wet) and later disposal by means of a brush or
compressed air.
• Removal of particles in suspension (wet) with solvents.
• Other appropriate cleaning techniques may be used provided that these do not interfere with the
subsequent requirements.

5.17 Inspections reports.

5.17.1 The location of the signs must be documented according to the customer's requirements. In case
of absence of these requirements, the location will be made according to the criterion of the
examiner.
5.17.2 For each inspection the technician level II shall draw up an inspection report in the format
indicated in annex 2, to which is attached any documentation, information or necessary drawing
that allows monitoring of the report to the component or area of the component or equipment
inspected.

6 APPROVALS.
6.1 The approval of this procedure will be provided by the General Manager.

7 UPDATE.
7.1 This procedure is kept up-to-date through a review every 18 months or whenever required.
7.2 Rating procedure.
7.2.1 When the specified qualification of this procedure, a change in a table T-721 of the annex 1
requirement identified as a variable that should require requalification of the procedure written by
demonstration. A change of a requirement identified as a non-essential variable, will not require
reclassification of the written document. All changes of essential and non-essential variables specified
within the written procedure will require review or an addendum.
