1.8 Life as a Hunter- Conclusion

One of our big questions from the Battle at Kruger video was Why do lions hunt in groups? In the Life as a
Hunter activity (Parts 1 & 2), we compared the feeding behaviors of solo versus a group. Using what you
learned in the activity, answer the question:

Why do lions hunt in groups?

Claim:
Lions hunt in groups because…
Observations made by scientists with data and research can prove that hunting in groups by lions can help
not only feed themselves but others in groups.

Evidence:
I know this because, in the activity, I calculated that...
According to the evidence in 1.6 Life as a Hunter, it shows that catching just one Zebra, lion’s, or prey can
gain 115,000 KCal. Also, evidence shows that it would need 106,000 KCal for pride to support itself. And so
concluding that 115,000 KCal would be able to support a pride/groups. Excluding obtaining energy, they are
benefits of living in a group. Including security, comfort, and many others. Because there is strength in
numbers, no one will dare go up to a pride of lions to attack them. So there is security in living with others.
Also, living in a group allows for communication and understanding of other things by each lion. This type of
behavior can impact their energy and overall wellness by using less energy to get food and gain more food in
return for the amount of food they get, making the process more efficient. Overall the evidence shown in 1.6
Life as a Hunter shows that this is the best solution in feeding a pride/group and this being calculated overall
in how lions hunt in groups.

Reasoning:
Based on this information, the reason WHY lions hunt in groups is because…
So they can feed themselves and others in the group as well. So good behavior in less energy and more
efficiency in the getting food process is caused by lioning hunting in groups and allowing communication,
reasoning, and such. This concludes how this connects and supports the reasoning why lions hunt in groups
and why it's beneficial in return rather than hunting solo.
