 Introduction
• Building energy standards or codes are important reference in green building
rating tools. Many rating tools in the world are now developing or upgrading their
criteria in order to achieve the energy efficiency goals.

• The overall thermal transfer value (OTTV) and Residential Envelope Transmittance
Value (RETV) are used as control measures for building envelope design in GreenRE
Rating Tools.

• The controls on OTTV and RETV aim at enhancing overall thermal performance of
building envelope to minimise heat gain thus reducing the overall cooling load
requirement.

• The solar heat gain through the building envelope constitutes a substantial share of
cooling load in an air-conditioned building. In non air-conditioned buildings, the solar
heat gain causes thermal discomfort.

• The OTTV requirement is simple, and was developed for air-conditioned building. It is
also a useful indicator for non air-conditioned buildings. The OTTV aims at achieving
the design of building envelope to cut down external heat gain and hence reduce the
cooling load of the air-conditioning system.

•The OTTV of the building envelope for a building, having a total air-conditioned area
exceeding 1000 m2 should not exceed 50 W/m.
