Structured Questions (100 marks)

Answer All questions.

1. (a) An airplane is flying with a velocity of 90.0 m/s at an angle of 23.0˚ above
the horizontal. When the plane is 114 m directly above a dog that is
standing on level ground, a suitcase drops out of the luggage
compartment. You can ignore air resistance. Determine the;
i. horizontal distance of the suitcase from the dog.
(5 marks)

ii. angle of impact.

(b) A mass of 0.2 kg is rotated horizontally at the end of a string of 1.3 m long
with a linear speed of 4 m/s. Calculate the frequency in rpm.
(4 marks)

(c) A pendulum is swinging in a horizontal circle at an angle of 40˚ with

respect to the y-axis. The mass of the pendulum bob is 0.03 kg. The
radius of the circle is 0.2 m. Determine the linear velocity of the pendulum.

2. (a) Compare between elastic and inelastic collisions in term of momentum

and kinetic energy conservation.
(4 marks)

(b) A 20 kg crate initially at rest is pulled over a smooth, horizontal surface by

a 40 N force acting at 45˚ above the horizontal. The crate is displaced by
6 m. Determine the final momentum of the crate.
(6 marks)

(c) A projectile proton with a speed of 500 m/s collides elastically with a target
proton initially at rest. Both protons then move along perpendicular paths,
with the projectile proton path at 60˚ from the original direction. Calculate
the velocity of both protons immediately after the collision.

3. (a) A 2 kg wooden block is pushed against a spring with negligible mass and
force constant k = 500 N/m, compressing it by 0.2 m. When the block is
released, it moves along a frictionless, horizontal surface and then up a
frictionless incline with slope of 35˚. Calculate the;

i. distance travelled by the block up the incline before starting to slide

back down.
(4 marks)

ii. velocity of the block along horizontal surface.

(3 marks)

(b) A 0.1 kg rock is thrown vertically upward with an initial speed of 20 m/s.
The air drag on the rock is negligible. Calculate the maximum height
reached by the rock above the launching level.

(c) A block of 10 kg ice initially at rest slides down a frictionless ramp at angle
50˚ while an ice worker pulls on the block (via a rope) with a force FT that
has a magnitude of 50 N and is directed up the ramp as shown in Figure 1
below. The block slides through distance d = 0.50 m along the ramp. By
using the work theorem, determine the final velocity of the block.
