RELATION BETWEEN SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE AND VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE
ABSTRACT
The research work is an attempt to understand the relation between sustainable architecture and
vernacular architecture with a focus on the case area of Newari Architecture of Kathmandu
Valley and Gurung Architecture of Machhapuchhre Gaun.
The ontological claim that, there exists a deep relation between sustainable architecture and
vernacular architecture in terms of fundamental principle. The nature of research is exploratory
with inductive approach. The research falls under constructivism paradigm with use of case
study as methodology. The methods used in data collection were ethnography, interview,
phenomenology and literature review.
The case study is done for vernacular architecture of Newari house of Kathmandu Valley and
Gurung House of Machhapuchhre Gaun and is analyzed under the parameters of sustainability to
understand their relation.

Vernacular Architecture.
