what is saturation in transformer Answer

#1
Transformer saturation means its core
saturation.transformer core is made up of silicon steel
laminations to reduce eddy current losses and to provide
low reluctance path to the flow of flux.all magnetic
materials will experiance a phenomena called hysteresis
loss.in case of transformer also if the primary current
(flux)keep on increasing(acc to load)at a certain stage
hystersis loss will comes to such a stage it will not
further increase.this situation in a transformer is
called
as saturation of core.

Transformer saturation means its core get saturated due
to
higher flux linkages than designed.simply we can say, the
feromagnetic substance acquired some residual magnetism
due
to the application of higher level flux( about 4 to 5
times
normal designed flux). due to this, the transformer core
cannot act as a good flux linkage media.

If you run too much current, or too low a frequency, then
the core will saturate. This means as the current
increases, you do not get an increase in magnetic flux.
This is a bad thing, because it means you have no
inductance at that point. So if you apply a ac voltage
from
a low impedance driving source to a coil that has very
low
inductance, the current will be excessively high!

there is a limit for allowing magnetic flux in a magnetic
circuit, in this case core of the transformer, depending
upon the nature of material and cross section.any further
attempt to increse the flux by incresing current/voltage,
will limit allowing flux thro'the magetic circuit.
saturation is thus reached. the saturation condition can
be
used to design transformers for getting constant voltage
output

Transformers are also constrained in their performance by
the magnetic flux limitations of the core. For
ferromagnetic
core transformers, we must be mindful of the saturation
limits of the core. Remember that ferromagnetic materials
cannot support infinite magnetic flux densities: they
tend
to "saturate" at a certain level (dictated by the
material
and core dimensions), meaning that further increases in
magnetic field force (mmf) do not result in proportional
increases in magnetic field flux (Φ).

Saturation means, the electro magnatize core will not
produce more flux behoind saturation point even if the
input of the core is keep on increasing.

As we all know Magnetic flux (Fi) is proportional to V/f
,
Where V is the applied voltage and f is the system
frequency. Whenever V increases or f reduces due to
faults
or addition or removal of load (higher) changes magnetic
flux density of the transformer tending to increase. Also
fi= BxA,where B= Magnetic flux density, and A= area of
cross section, then as fi increases the transformer will
not have sufficient area to accomodate the excess peak
flux
created by the scenarios like overvoltage or
underfrequency
operation of the transformer. Then the transformer get
rid
of the linear operating region ( Further increase in
voltage will not make any change at output). Hysterisis
or
core loss will be higher during this period. Hence the
efficiency of the transformer reaches very low.
