CONFIDENTIAL
PROPOSAL FOR UTeM (FTMK)
RESEARCH COLLABORATION

1. OBJECTIVE
This study embarks on the following objectives:

1. To investigate characteristics and step of human movement human activity and recognition
algorithm for floods water level estimation.
2. To design a human movement human activity and recognition algorithm for gait recognition
that can determine floods water level.
3. To evaluate the performance of proposed human movement human activity and recognition
algorithm compared to other comparable algorithm

2. BACKGROUND
Generally, the classification of floods water level can be considered similar to human movement
monitoring. This is due to, it using same technique which is using gait characteristic. In this
review, a review of human movement monitoring algorithm will be described. In this proposal,
the discussion only focuses on human movement monitoring algorithm that utilizing mobile
phone sensors rather than wearable sensors [1] [2] [3]. In this related work, we divide the
research work into two different categorizations.

The first categorization of human movement tracking algorithm is gait recognition. The
algorithm basically focusing on involving an estimation, definition and examination of the
amounts characterizing human locomotion [4] [5]. In this categorization, the algorithm was used
to predict the healthiness of people especially people suffering from a chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD) by calculating an individual's pace of movement, as this is an
indicator of his or her safety. Others used the algorithm to track irregular gait habits that can be
used as a warning to suggest falls susceptibility [6] or Parkinson's disease development
[18].Apart from that, there is system so-called Gait-based device identification and
authentication. This is for detecting handset fraud, gait faking and health app spoofing attempts
to assert healthcare benefits or to find fault with the successful operation of mobile healthcare
systems[7] [8] [10] [25 ]. Beside that, there is an algorithm that used to analyzes the gait to
assess an individual's level of intoxication [9].

Another categorization is known as the identification of human activity (HAR). The movements
including human sitting, human biking, human standing, human walking, ascending and
descending stairs. The human action can recognized and allow energy expenditure measurement,
which can then be used to measure human body status (example: obesity or diabetis).
Apart from that, HAR methods usually use a data window[12][ 20] that extends a few seconds to
characterize the operation by measuring statistical features over the window. These are also cited
as aspects of the time domain.
Meanwhile, the algorithm provides coefficients of auto regression [13] [15] [17] and provides
auto-correlation [12] as a tool for modelling the association between data points in close
proximity. Frequency domain features such as spectral strength, strong coefficients for Fourier
transform have also been used[12],[14]. The other algorithm such Naïve bayes, decision trees,
KNN, strong believe network and SVM [12] [14] [15] [16] [19], are used as the classifiers. Since
the sensor readings reflect a time series, the researcher [20] are using a convolutional neural
network (CNN) to allow the use of close proximity association between data points. Similarly,
[21] it is utilizes hidden markov models (HMMs) to construct data point sequences; their method
is hierarchical, the first stage of which reads raw data and defines human activity (for example
human walking or human standing) and the second level takes a series of activities as feedback
and identifies an operation (for example is shopping or bus travel).

Based on two (2) described human movement human activity and recognition algorithm
categorization, the previous algorithm is difficult to detect and predict flood level accurately.
This proposal proposes a human movement human activity and recognition algorithm in
detecting and predict the floods level water. In order to do that, adaptive special strategies
resampling particle filter processing approach will be develop as algorithm design.
