Title : Air Gap Specs. for Crankshaft and Camshaft Position Sensors

Applies To : 2004-2017 DT, 9, 10, N9, N10 Engines

CHANGE LOG
Please refer to the change log text box below for recent changes to this article:

04/06/2020 - Added 2010 and newer DT/9/10 engines. Replaced Illustrations. Updated failure modes.
03/08/2016 - Removed 2010 and newer DT/9/10 engines. Refer to the appropriate engine diagnostic manual. 
04/28/2015 - Author updated for feedback purposes

DESCRIPTION

As the cam/crank move, electromagnetic fields are created in the air gap with a certain value of intensity. The sensor picks up
this intensity. However, when the air gap is inaccurate the signal can become weak and biased. This may set a DTC and cause
a performance issue.

POSSIBLE DTCs

2004-06 2007-09 2010+

DTC 143 FMI 2 DTC 1143 SPN 8021 SPN 636 FMI 7
DTC 145 FMI 12 DTC 1144 SPN 8021 SPN 636 FMI 2
DTC 146 FMI 12 DTC 4551 SPN 8021 SPN 637 FMI 10
DTC 147 FMI 2 DTC 4553 SPN 8022 SPN 637 FMI 10
DTC 4554 SPN 8022 SPN 637 FMI 0
DTC 4555 SPN 8064

NOTE: If 636-2 sets only when the CPA Tool camshaft breakout harness is connected, a new camshaft position sensor will need to be installed in
order to run the CPA Tests.

HOW TO MEASURE AIRGAP

-Camshaft Sensor Air Gap (Figure 2)

1. Remove the camshaft sensor.
2. Using a Vernier Caliper or equivalent, measure from the front cover CMP mounting surface to the camshaft gear timing
peg (measurement A). See Figure 3.
3. Measure the length of the cam sensor (measurement B). See Figure 4.
4. Subtract measurement "B" from "A". See Failure Modes for possible causes if out of specification.
