I. Introductory Concept

Personal Protective Equipment

The best way to correct a hazard is by replacing, repairing or removing the

deficiency. When there is no other way to remove the hazard, the worker may be
protected by using PPE such as earmuffs, respirators, goggles, gloves, etc. Using
PPE is one element in a complete safety plan that uses a variety of strategies to
maintain a safe and healthy farm environment.

II. Learning Competencies

L01. Prepare materials, tools and equipment for horticultural production work
TLE_AFAC9HC-Ia-e-1
1.4.Select and check the suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
as required by the job.
Objectives:
1. Name the different types of Personal Protective Equipment
2. Determine the appropriate PPE used in farm operation
3. Identify and gather the proper PPE and use it correctly.

III. Activities

A. Lesson Information

Personal Protective Equipment in Farming

Working in the agriculture sector means complying with strict health and safety
regulations and that means buying high-quality products which not only meet the required
safety standards but are also appropriate for the kind of work you engage in. This could be
anything from disposable chemical resistant gloves to gas masks, self-contained breathing
apparatuses, air purifying disposable masks, and many other different personal protective
equipment used in farming.
Aside from purchasing quality PPE equipment and products, you’d also want to buy
specifically those that fit well and are as comfortable to wear as possible.

particles, metal or sparks, liquid chemicals, caustic liquids, light
radiation, i.e., welding, laser. (e.g. sunglasses, safety glasses,
goggles, full face shields, welding shields)

Hearing Protection

To provide protection during exposure to high pitch and loud

noise levels. (e.g. earplugs, earmuffs)

Respiratory protection

To provide protection from inhalation hazards such as vapors,

mists, particulates, pesticides, and gases. (e.g. respirators, masks)

Hand protection

To provide protection during exposure to potential hazards such

as sharp objects, abrasive surfaces, temperature extremes, and chemical
contact. (e.g. padded cloth gloves, rubber
gloves, heat-resistant gloves, vinyl/neoprene gloves)

Head protection

It provides protection to potential hazards such as falling

objects, striking against low-hanging objects, electrical hazards, or
chemical application. (e.g. safety helmets, wide brimmed hats to protect
against the sun, hard hats, chemical-resistant hats).

Foot protection

To provide protection for situations with the potential of injuries

such as falling or rolling objects, chemical or liquid exposures, piercing
objects, and where feet are exposed to electrical hazards. (e.g. farm
boots, rubber footwear, electric hazard footwear, steel toe footwear).

Clothing protection

It provides protection from potential hazards such as

entanglement, skin cancer, bodily injury, and pesticide
contamination. (E.g. sun protective clothing, reflective safety
clothing, flame-resistant clothing, chemical-resistant coveralls
and aprons).

“An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure”: A saying which always reminds
us of our safety in everything we do.

Any place we go, any work we undertake, we are exposed to risks or hazards. To avoid
such, we must be extra careful of our actions and decisions. See to it that the workplace meets
the OHS standards.
