NUEVA ECIJA
- One of the oldest province in the country
- Known as the Rice Granary of the Philippines
- Covering 5 cities and 27 municipalities
- Rich in history, culture, and heritage
- One of the first eight provinces that rose in revolt
against Spain
(September 2, 1896 - The “First Cry of Nueva Ecija”)
- Became seat of the Philippine Government during
the Spanish Period particularly the town of San
Isidro

HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION
OF THE SIDECO HOUSE

CRISPULO SIDECO HOUSE
- Also known as “Malacanang of Nueva Ecija
- one of the few remaining ancestral houses in San Isidro,
Nueva Ecija
- a typical bahay-na –bato of the late 19th century built by
Crispulo Sideco
- considered as the most historical residential in Nueva
Ecija and one of the best houses in the province
- typifies the houses of Floral Period in Philippine Colonial
Architecture
- witnessed the changing sovereignty of the nation
- withstood the ravages of the World War II and provided
headquarters from our national heroes, Americans and
Japanese
- used as a temporary church also of the town.
- serves as an standing edifice that provided noble,
meaningful and indelible memories to the general public

Owners of the house
The original owner of the house is Crispulo Sideco, famously
known in the town as Kapitang Pulong
Dona Adela, third wife of the late Crispulo Sideco, became the
heiress of this house
Mrs. Adela Tinio bought the house and lot to P13, 000. Mr.
Simon Tinio, his nephew, took charge of the house.
No antique furnitures were left and the house have been renovated for
P20,000. They changed the interior ceilings and partition walls
because of termite infestation; but the rest are original.
After the death of Adela Tinio, she passed the ownership of
the house to Mariano Tinio.
Mariano decided to sell the house and lot in 1995 to Mr. Leo
Guingon.
Renovations and partitions of interior spaces and installation of
electrical wirings were done in the house.
After the death of Mr. Guingon in 2020, the present owner of
the house are his three children

SIGNIFICANCE ARISING FROM THE HISTORICAL
DEVELOPMENT OF THE PLACE
▷ The Sideco house is the most historical residence in Nueva Ecija for it
became the Capitol of the First Philippine Republic for more than five months
when Emilio Aguinaldo established his headquarters in this house when
trying to elude the American forces.
▷ When the old church of San Isidro eroded and was washed
away by Pampanga River during American Period, the Sideco
house was used for church rituals and services in the absence
of a permanent church
▷ It became a headquarters of American stationed in the town:
Colonel Funston planned Aguinaldo’s capture in Isabela
▷ The Japanese also used this house as headquarter during their regime

SOCIAL SIGNIFICANCE
➢The Sideco house served as a headquarter of
dignitaries like President Emilio Aguinaldo,
Colonel Frederick Funston, and Gov-Gen Luke Wright
➢ The Sideco House is a venue of official visitation and state
dinners by important dignitaries
➢ It housed the School for Deaf, a venue for educational and
social activities
➢ Constructed by original owner of the house, Crispulo
Sideco, popularly known, Kapitang Pulong
➢ Used as Aguinaldo Gospel Center

ARCHITECTURAL AND AESTHETIC SIGNIFICANCE
❖ Symmetrical layout of plan
❖ Designed by Crispulo Sideco, the original
owner of the house in early 19th century
❖ A typical bahay na bato, of Spanish vintage
❖ A reminiscent of the Floral Period in
Philippine Colonial Architecture

TOWNSCAPE SIGNIFICANCE
➢ Sideco House, situated at the corner of P. Carmen and Vallarta St. is a
significant landmark of San Isidro and Nueva Ecija as a whole
➢ Sideco House is one of the historical spot in the province

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE LANDSCAPE AND SETTING
❑ Situated at the boundary of San Isidro and Jaen, N.E.

EDUCATIONAL & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE


❑ Formerly a location of temporary venue
for church rituals and services when the original
church was washed away by Pampanga River
❑ Used by Baptist in prayer meetings and other
church activities
❑ Formerly the site of School for the Deaf until it
was transferred in San Isidro Central Elementary School
and T.A. Dionisio National High School

TECHNOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE
❖ It has fared four earthquakes from 1937-1990
August 10, 1937 - earthquake which destroyed Pila, Laguna
Church
April 2, 1968 – Rubi Tower collapsed
April 7, 1970 – P. Guevara School collapse
July 16, 1990 – Baguio and Nueva Ecija Earthquake
❖ Use thick walls made from bricks, lime and adobe in ground
floor and light materials of wood in second floor
❖ Presence of aljibe, a water cistern
❖ High ceiling and glass panelled windows
❖ Cross ventilation
❖ Use of galvanized iron sheets

INTERIOR SPACES OF SIGNIFICANCE
➢ Original solid wooden doors with
carved floral bouquets
➢ The grand staircase made of hardwood
with wrought iron grille screens serve as
graceful accent to the dark hue of stair
➢ Wide planked flooring of molave
➢ Ancient aljibe or water cistern
➢ Wooden sliding persianas
➢ Stamped metals on ceiling soffit

CONCLUSIONS
▷ The most significant value of the Sideco House relates to its historical
significance as a Capitol of the First Philippine Republic headed by
Pres. Emilio Aguinaldo.

▷ The Sideco House relates to its historical, architectural, social,


technological, educational and spiritual values.

▷ The house, although not declared and protected by any government


agency, can be considered as important cultural heritage not only in
Nueva Ecija but also in the Philippines.

recommendations
❑ Due to its high cultural significance, there is a need to
conduct proper documentation for the heritage structure

❑ Conservation management plan may be designed in order


to protect and conserve the house from further
deterioration and damage

❑ If possible, present owners may be encouraged to


conserve the house through adaptive reuse with the help
of conservation experts
