IN VITRO
FERTILIZATION

In vitro - outside the body

- latin; "in a test tube, culture, dish"
- is the joining of a woman's egg and a man's
sperm in a laboratory dish.
Fertilization- the sperm has attached to and entered the
egg.

IVF is a form of assisted reproductive technology (ART).

This means special medical techniques are used to help
a woman become pregnant. It is most often tried when
other, less expensive fertility techniques have failed.

History of IVF
1890- the very first in vitro manipulation of
eggs/embryos was performed by Walter Heape,
when he transferred in vivo fertilized eggs from one
female rabbit to another
1969- M.C, Chang successfully conducted IVF in
rabbits.
1977- the first IVF pregnancy in human and the birth
of Louise Brown
Step 1: Step 4: Embryo
Stimulation culture

Step 3:
Insemination
and fertilization

Step 2: Egg Step 5: Embryo

retrieval transfer

Step 1:
Stimulation

"also called super ovulation"

· Medicines, called fertility drugs,

are given to the woman to
boost egg production.

Step 2:
Egg retrieval

· A minor surgery, called follicular aspiration, is

done to remove the eggs from the woman's body.

Step 3:
· The man's sperm is placed together In se m in a tio n
with the best quality eggs. and
The mixing of the sperm and egg is
called insemination. fe r tiliz at ion

· Eggs and sperm are then stored in an

environmentally controlled chamber.

The sperm most often enters (fertilizes)

an egg a few hours after insemination.

· When the fertilized egg divides,

it becomes an embryo. Laboratory staff
will regularly check the embryo to make
sure it is growing properly. Within about
5 days, a normal embryo has severa cells
that are actively dividing.
Step 4:

Embryo

Culture
· Embryos are placed into
the woman's womb Step 5:
3 to 5 days after egg
Embryo
retrieval and fertilization.

I- JOEL CRUZ FATHERHOOD
ON HIS FIRST TWINS

SUMMARY
Entrepreneur Joel Cruz, the owner of the famous perfume brand Aficionado, has his
fruits of hard work evident as his perfume brand became well known and adored by many.
With all his booming wealth, he dreamed of having children on his own. He did not want to
adopt so he consulted a Singaporean doctor in a fertility clinic for the possibilities of in
vitro fertilization (IVF).
Cruz continued to travel to Singapore from time to time to have further tests but failed
due to low sperm count. He lost interest for the first time but then he tried it in the
Philippines with three Filipino surrogates but floundered. He was devastated and suffered
depression. Until 2011, an agency in Russia became his partner towards his goal with Lilia
as the potential surrogate mother. He only first dreamed of having a boy but he became a
father of twins.
Lilia finally delivered Cruz’s twins on Sept. 4, 2012. Two days after their birth, Cruz
received photos of the twins. Although they had light brown hair and alabaster skin, they
looked Filipino.
CASE DILEMMA:

Should Joel Cruz continue the process to achieve

his ultimate dream despite mental health
consequences and another possibility of failing or
To choose not to for his sanity and peace of mind?

SUMMARY
Simply Rhaze is Filipina Youtuber who married an American
and they live in Australia. The couple Rhaze and Dan were
planning to have their baby, but suddenly the process of
having what they want there are some difficulties for
achieving it. They went through a lot of effort just for wanting
to have a baby.

Like what they’ve said in the vlog that the process of IVF is
one of the painful journeys to the biggest blessing ever.
CASE DILEMMA:
Choosing whether they will pursue the IVF
journey to have a baby, knowing that there are
some circumstances to encounter to have a
child or To not take the IVF process and just
wait until Rhaze naturally conceive a child

There is no principle that is violated

SUMMARY
Scarlet Snow was the baby developed and was
conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF), a method
that fertilizes the mother's egg and the father's sperm
in a laboratory dish before being implanted in the
biological or surrogate mother's uterus. For this case
Scarlet was birthed by a unnamed Mexican-American
surrogate mother in the U.S.
CASE DILEMMA:
The dilemma for this case is that when Dra. Vicki Belo
accepted the fact that she is not the birth giver and
she strongly trusts the process of IVF to the surrogate
mother, which will result in having her baby Scarlet
Snow. She quoted and came into being, "it may not
have come from my tummy but straight from my
heart.'

There is no principle that is violated,

•Autonomy
•Beneficence because they came into a legal process
just to have a successful result of this
IVF journey.
