CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM

Background of the Study

K12 curriculum is a system implement by the Department of Education (DepEd). Before

taking an additional 2 years in Senior High School, students are free to choose the offerings

of the curriculum: The Academic Track, Sports, Arts, and Technical-Vocational Track. The

main purpose of it is to develop learner’s skills for them to be ready to start to work if they

want to start a business or continue college. One more reason why it was executed was that

foreign countries think that a 10-year curriculum was insufficient and K12 provides basic

competencies to meet the standards of foreign abroad.

Becoming one of Grade 11 student, they must be ready to decide for their future. It is a

very important for the students of what will they choose because there are many things that

would tend them to get possibly suffer in the end. There is nothing a being worry but to make

them sure as possible, they should decide for it before.

According to Boyer (1987) in taking a course, one of the life’s major decisions is made. A

lot of time, money and afford will be involved. The shape and excellence of the students life

may rest on the result. “In choosing a Junior Senior Academic Track, a student should take a

risk. F. Yates, Veinotte, and Patalano (2003) define a decision as “… a commitment to a

course of action that is intended to produce a satisfying state of affairs. “A student will

choose a course which he/she will be studying throughout his/her college years, and decision-

making should take part and should not take for granted. Preparedness of Grade 10 students
6

for Senior High School comes with different factors. A student should be prepare

academically but not financially as other students here.

The Grade 10 students are now having their choices that they may choose according to

their personal interest, which is very common to take. It equips the students with the

knowledge and skills to pursue a better life.

There are factors that could affect Grade 10 students in choosing a strand in the Academic

when they become a Senior High School student, there is certain connection with the

demographic profiles of the Grade 10 students.

The researchers will provide career guidance in choosing and handling certain decision

making with the help of the three factors such as personal, family and school factors.

Being on incoming Grade-11 student, students must be ready to choose and decide for

their future. It is very important for the students of what will they choose because all students

want a good life in the near future and if they got it wrong, their future will be at risk and

students should avoid that and start to make a move. In the process of choosing of what track

they will walk on, there are factors affecting their decision, it can be human, things or even

situation. These factors has a great impact with their life that it could change their insights

and his/her decision to be aware and more educated and have a clever decision. The

researchers decide to identify those factors and make it clearer to everyone.

The added two years Senior High School track aims to equip them with knowledge and

skills that will help them prepare better for their chosen path. Senior High School (SHS) is
7

the last two years of the K-12 Program that includes Grade 11 and 12 (Department of

Education).

The Philippines before the implementation of K-12 was the only Asian country to have a

10-years of education program and one of the three countries which still has implemented

along with Djibouti and Angola in Africa (Geronimo, 2013). They say K-12 curriculum is the

key to educating young people. Expanding the knowledge of each student that they will be

prepared for their Senior High School education. Some students only agree with K-12

especially their parents. Some say that their schooling is getting longer and increasing their

tuition expenses.

Education is one of the most important aspects that every student has to enhance. It is at

formal manner of learning, and helps to develop more of one’s skills and habits. Oneself can

be recognized in the public community through education.

Attaining a healthy and good education skill, one should work and study harder for better.

To have it, one must consider the quality of education and its effectiveness. Educational

methods include storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, and directed research. In the

educational process, education frequently takes place under the guidance of educators and

learners may educate themselves. This can be taking in formal or informal settings and any

experience that has effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered as

education, formative on the other hand, these are some factors hinder the access to a quality

education. These include economic status, family background, interest, job opportunities. In

some study, it showed that if they attained a lower educational achievement it potentially

affect their society.

8

Parental attitudes and previous educational experiences influenced the selection of a math

class over a verbal course. Parental attitudes and race influenced the selection of a science

course over a verbal course.

The importance that parents place on mathematics and science for the child's future had

the most powerful influence over students' selections compared to other variables and appear

to offset negative attitudes that might prevent females from selecting math courses. If the

people attained a higher educational achievement, they can choose whatever job they want

because there is a high chance that they get a lot of job opportunities for them to choose but

deciding and choosing is hard to do.

Furthermore, the K-12 Basic Education Program aims to provide every Filipino child with

the education they need to compete in a global context. The goal of the new curriculum is to

give Filipino students enough time to master skills and concepts so that they are ready for

tertiary education when the time comes. This study tackles about factors affecting the strand

preferences of Grade 10 students of The Mabini Academy. Factors are circumstances that

contribute to a result or outcome. The decision on good career choice and school sometimes

depend on how the way the students perceive the world and their future. Some of them may

not have enough knowledge and consciousness about how they should process information

from personal, social, economic, political, spiritual and environmental aspects of putting into

context and realization of having a successful profession.

Decision making is one of the factors that can affect the academic track of the Grade 10.

students. According to Laguador (2013), as a sign of respect for the parents and culture of the

Filipinos, parents or the elderly being consulted first by their children because primarily they

will be the one to provide financial support to enter in college.

9

Strand choosing requires a mature and high thinking ability because this will decide what

future is waiting. Some students have a good favor in Senior High School Curriculum

because it helps them to better understanding in choosing what course they want in college.

For them this is helpful have since it is much faster to get a job opportunity in other countries.

In some reason, it is a good way to enhance the knowledge for the strand they are choosing

like others.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to identify “Internal Factors that Influence the Grade 10 Batac

National High School (BNHS) in Choosing their Strand for the Senior High School.”

Specifically, it seeks answers to the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the Grade 10 students of Batac National High

School?

2. What are the Internal Factors that Influence the Grade 10 Students of

Batac National High School in Choosing their Strand for Senior High

School as to:

a. Personality

b. Talent, Skills, & Abilities

c. Interest

3. Is there a significant relationship between the profile of the Grade 10

students influencing the students on their chosen strands?

Significance of the Study

Teachers: The result will serve as a guide for the Teachers to know the insights.

Students: The result will serve as a guide for incoming K to 12 students in choosing their

strands. It will also give them an overview on the different factors that they should and

should not consider upon choosing a specific strand.

10

Parents: The given data would help them to realize that they don’t do the decision making

for their own sake. It will help their children to make certain decisions regarding to their

chokes of strand.

Researchers: This study aims to serve reference to help in conducting their own field of

study. They can also apply this study to other strand in their specific schools.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study deals with the internal factors influencing students in choosing their strand for

the Senior High School. The study was focused on the Grade 10 students in Batac National

High School who are having a hard time deciding on what strand to take.

This study was an investigation on the factors affecting the choices of the students under

K-12 on which track they would take for Senior High School. The study was only limited to

the Grade 10 students of Batac National High School.

This study mainly focused on the factors such as the profile of the students, Parental

Influence, Peer Influence, Environment, Personality, Interests, Aptitude, and opportunity.

There may be more factors however, those would not be within this study.

Definition of Terms

CHAPTER II

Review of Literature and Studies

RELATED LITERATURE

In our research determine the Internal Factors that Influence the Grade 10 Students of

Batac National High School (BNHS) on their chosen strand, we included the written

information about our research including books, articles, and Internet sources. These are the

studies, investigations already conducted are similar and related to our research. These are

focused on the discussion about the factors that affect students on choosing their strand.

Some are the general factors are as follows:

SKILLS

The child begins skills or the finer coordination in which the smaller muscles play a

major role. Skills must be learned, but when they are learned is as important to know as how

they are learned. Children who receive training are definitely superior to those who receive

no training, but the training must be correlated with their maturational readiness to learn.

(Child Growth and Development, p. 61,

ABILITIES, & TALENTS

Considering your abilities and talents and how they may fit a particular occupation

comes out of one of the earliest career development fields, Trait-Factor theories, and is still

used today. These theories recommend creating occupational profiles for specific jobs as well

as identifying individual differences, matching individuals to occupations based on these

differences. You can identify activities you enjoy and those in which you have a level of

competency though a formal assessment.

12

Interest is often thought of as a process that contributes to learning and achievement.

That is, being interested in a topic is a mental resource that enhances learning, which then

leads to better performance and achievement (Hidi, 1990). As individuals learn more about a

topic, they become more skilled and knowledgeable (Harackiewicz, Hulleman, 2009). This

simply means that having an interest on something will eventually develop and enhance the

skill of an individual.

PERSONALITY

The social behavior and attitudes of a child, even as he grows older and comes contact

with more and more people outside the home, are reflections of patterns prevalent in the

child’s home; It is very important that good foundations be laid during the early years of life

for the child because the child’s social behavior is consistent as he grows older. (Child

Growth and Development, p. 96, 1978)

An individual’s personality is “total picture of his organized behavior, especially as it

can be characterized by his fellow men in a consistent way” (Dashiell, 1949).

study. Batac National High School is at the Barangay 14 Bungon, City of Batac, Ilocos Norte.

Students from the section of Sunflower, Tulip, Waling-waling, and Zinnia are the

respondents.

Population and Sampling Procedure

This research respondents are the Grade 10 students of Batac National High School.

Thus, there are 32 students who will getting involve for this researchers. On this method we

will see how this study will get the data that needed for this research to accomplish.

Research Instruments

Questionnaire will be the instrument for data gathering. This will concentrate on

answering the statement of the problem.

14

Data Gathering Procedure

Researchers need to have a permit first from the classroom teachers, so they can give the

questionnaires to the respondents. After the respondents answer the questionnaire, it will have

return to the researchers. The results of the answer questionnaires are then given the accurate

statistical treatment of data.

Statistical Treatment

The data that the researchers gathered were analyzed and interpreted by employing the

following statistical procedure:

Frequency, percentage and ranking

To easily tally the data that gathered. Also to answer problems in describing the respondents

in terms of selected variables like personality, talent/skills, and interest.

Weighted mean. This is used to provide answer in analyzing the data in choosing a

strand in terms of the internal factors that influence the Grade 10 students. The formula is:

Where: x=mean

f=frequency

x=quantitative option

n=total number of respondents

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the data gathered the results of the statistical analysis done and

interpretation of findings. These are present in tables following the sequence of the specific

research problem regarding the Internal Factors that Influence the Grade 10 Students of Batac

National High School in Choosing their Strand in Senior High School.

The following are the profile of the respondents as to their gender and strands that was

gather through a questionnaire. The Internal Factors that Influence the Grade 10 Students of

Batac National High School in Choosing their Strand in Senior High School with their mean

and descriptive in interpretation where table 1 will be able to identify the highest mean and

their corresponding interpretations.

It can be gleaned on the table that most of the respondents answered talent and skills

with total of 27.27%. On the contrary, personality has the smallest percentage of 9.9% as the

most internal factors that influence the Grade 10 students in choosing their Strands in Senior

High School.
17

In support to this, from the book of Child Growth and Development, p.61 says that child

begins skills or the finer coordination in which the smaller muscles play a major role. Skills

must be learned, but when they are learned is as important to know as how they are learned.

Children who receive training are definitely superior to those who receive no training, but the

Gender -0.228187 -0.094680 -0.920390

Table 3 shows the correlation between the profile and the internal factors that influence

grade 10 in choosing their career.

In terms of the students, there is a very low correlation (0.17) between the section and the

interest of the students, with an r-value of -0.16887 while the Talent, skills and abilities with

a completed r-value of -0.960448, points out a very high correlation with the strand at the

respondents indicating a significant relationship between two.

With regards to gender it was found out that it has a very high correlation with interest

aspect with an r-value of 0.94680 in addition, personality present the lowest significant

relationship with gender have an r-value of -0.228187.

The students choose their strand not because of their interest but because of “They do not

want to involve in the fields that may sound to require extensive hard work ( Fizer 2013)”

like they will look the easiest.

18

Young men and women have different styles when it comes to choosing a career

(Mihyeon, 2009). Men have a more liberal and progressive style of thinkin. Women prefer a

hierarchical style of thinking (Mihyeon, 2009).

19
