Discussion 1
Name at least 1 similarity and difference between Scientific notation and Engineering
notation.
Scientific notation provides a convenient method to represent large and small numbers and to
perform calculations involving such numbers. In scientific notation, a quantity is expressed as a
product of a number between 1 and 10 and a power of ten. For example, the quantity 150,000 is
expressed in scientific notation as 1.5 * 105, and the quantity 0.00022 is expressed as 2.2 * 10-4.
Similarity: Both are closely related because engineering notation, often known as engineering
form, is a type of scientific notation in which the tenth exponent must be divisible by three.
Converting numbers into Scientific and Engineering notations helps large numbers to be
workable and manageable. Both notations can show any number of digits to the right of the
decimal that is always considered significant. Additionally, both notations require dividing a
number into two components, which are commonly referred to as a "significand" and an
"exponent."
Difference: The most distinguishable difference between Scientific notation and Engineering
notation is how engineering notation follows the metric system prefixes. This results to a
different range of values and the allowable powers of 10 used to denote the values.
In engineering notation, multiples of three denotes that the exponent of the power of ten must be
a multiple of three. A multiple of three is a number obtained by multiplying three by a whole
number. Multiples of 3 are: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21...
