574 Appendix A The Laplace Transform

Thus in the limit as k S 0 the Laplace transform tends to the value 1:

L5d 1 t 2 6 5 1
Since the area of the above impulse is 1 we can define the size of such an
impulse as being 1. Thus the above equation gives the Laplace transform for
a unit impulse. An impulse of size a is represented by ad 1 t 2 and the Laplace
transform is
L 5 ad 1 t 2 6 5 a

transforms In determining the Laplace transforms of functions it is not usually neces-
sary to evaluate integrals since tables are available that give the Laplace
transforms of commonly occurring functions. These, when combined
with a knowledge of the properties of such transforms (see the next sec-
tion), enable most commonly encountered problems to be tackled. Table
A.1 lists some of the commoner time functions and their Laplace trans-
forms. Note that in the table f 1 t 2 5 0 for all negative values of t and the
u 1 t 2 terms have been omitted from most of the time functions and have
to be assumed.

A.3.1 Properties of Laplace transforms

In this section the basic properties of the Laplace transform are outlined.
These properties enable the table of standard Laplace transforms to be used
in a wide range of situations.
