Vapour Compression of desalination of water

The vapour compression distillation process is used in combination with other process like MED (Multiple
Effect Distillation) and single-effect vapour compression. In this process, the heat for evaporating the seawater
comes from the compression of vapour. VC (Vapour Compression) plants take advantage of the principle of
reducing the boiling point temperature by reducing the pressure. Two devices, a mechanical compressor
(mechanical vapour compression) and a steam jet (thermal vapour compression), are used to condense the water
vapour to produce sufficient heat to evaporate incoming seawater. The mechanical compressor is usually
electrically or diesel-driven. VC units have been built in a variety of configurations to promote the exchange of
heat to evaporate the seawater. The compressor creates a vacuum in the evaporator and then compresses the
vapour taken from the evaporator and condenses it inside a tube bundle. Seawater is sprayed on the outside of
the heated tube bundle where it boils and partially evaporates, producing more vapour. With the steam-jet type
of VC distillation unit, called a thermo compressor, a venturi orifice at the steam jet creates and extracts water
vapour from the evaporator, creating a lower ambient pressure. The extracted water vapour is compressed by
the steam jet. This mixture is condensed on the tube walls to provide the thermal energy (heat of condensation)
to evaporate the seawater being applied on the other side of the tube walls in the evaporator.

3.1.3. Vapour compression evaporation

The vapour compression distillation (VCD) or vapour compression evaporation process is operated
individually or used along with other processes like MED (Multiple Effect Distillation) and single-
effect vapour compression. In this method the heat for evaporating the seawater (saline water)
comes from the compression of vapour and not by the direct exchange of heat from steam produced
in a boiler.

Two devices are generally used in this process to condense the water vapour to generate adequate
heat to evaporate the seawater. Among them one is a mechanical compressor (mechanical vapour
compression) and the other is a steam jet (thermal vapour compression). Vapour compression (VC)
units are built in different configurations. Mechanical compressor is generally used to generate the
heat for evaporation and it runs normally by electricity or diesel. This compressor creates vacuum
in the evaporator and compresses the vapour obtained from the evaporator, condenses it in a tube
bundle. The saline water is sprayed outside the heated tube bundle. Here the water boils and gets
evaporated partially creating more vapour.

In case of steam jet type of vacuum compression distillation, a venture orifice present at the steam
jet creates water vapour and extracts it from the water vapour, creating a lower atmospheric
temperature. The water vapour that is extracted is compressed by the steam jet and condensed on
the tube walls to furnish heat of condensation to evaporate the seawater that is being pumped on the
other side in the evaporator. The condensed water from tube bundle is emitted as fresh water.

These units are generally smaller in capacity, and are mostly used at hotels, resorts and in
industries.
