Buck-Boost Converter
Object
To understand and design a circuit of a Buck converter.

Theory
A Buck-Boost converter is a type of switched mode power supply that combines the principles of
the Buck Converter and the Boost converter in a single circuit. Hence, it is a type of converter that
can generate an output voltage either greater than or less than the input voltage.

Design Equations
With the help of following equation, we’re going to design our circuit:

𝑉𝑜
𝐷=
𝑉𝑜 + 𝑉𝑠

𝑅𝐿 × (1 − 𝐷)
𝐿=
2 × 𝑓𝑠

𝑉𝑜 × 𝐷
𝐶=
2 × 𝑅𝐿 × 𝑓𝑠 × 𝑟𝑉

𝑉𝑠 × 𝐷
𝐼𝐿 =
2 × 𝐿 × 𝑓𝑠

Where,

𝑉𝑠 = supply voltage, 𝑓𝑠 = switching freq., 𝑉𝑜 = output voltage,

𝑟𝑉 = ripple factor for voltage, 𝐼𝐿 = ripple current, 𝑅𝐿 = load resistor

Design Parameters
𝑉𝑠 = 48V

𝑉𝑜 = 15V

𝑅𝐿 = 10Ω

𝑟𝑉 = 1%

𝑓𝑠 = 40,000Hz

Calculations
𝑉𝑜 15𝑉
𝐷= =
𝑉𝑜 + 𝑉𝑠 15𝑉 + 48𝑉

𝑫 = 𝟎. 𝟐𝟑𝟖

𝑅𝐿 × (1 − 𝐷) 10 × (1 − 0.238)
𝐿= =
2 × 𝑓𝑠 2 × 40000

𝑳 = 95.25µH

𝑉𝑜 × 𝐷 15𝑉 × 0.238
𝐶= =
2 × 𝑅𝐿 × 𝑓𝑠 × 𝑟𝑉 2 × 10 × 40000 × 0.01

𝑪 = 𝟒𝟒𝟔. 𝟐𝟓µ𝑭

𝑉𝑠 × 𝐷 48𝑉 × 0.238
𝐼𝐿 = =
2 × 𝐿 × 𝑓𝑠 2 × 95.25µ𝐻 × 40000

𝑰𝑳 = 𝟏. 𝟒𝟗𝟗𝑨 𝒐𝒓 𝟏. 𝟓𝑨
