Use of bus transport is a growing business in the world and most of all in the third world countries hence
bus reservation system deals with maintenance of records of each passenger who had reserved a seat
for the particular journey; also maintaining information of each passenger like schedule and bus details
(Shivaji ,2010).This becoming tiresome and time wasting since this is done manually.
Electoronic tickets gives evidence that the holders can use any means of transportation (European
Metropolitan Transport Authority (EMTA),Mohamed Mezghani (2008)).this kind of system can be of
benefits to the respective company since it has never existed before(Imo Transport Company , owerri
2016).Imo is owned by the united states government with the primary objectives of spreading
hospitality and comfort to their eestemed customers away from their homes.
Currently,staff at the bus ticket counter use an internal system to the the tickets,thus customers would
have to go to the counter to buy bus tickets.in most times the customers are required to queue up along
queue to buy bus tickets and also to ask for information hence this brings a lot of inconveniences to the
customers(Badariah,Politeknik Kota Kuala Terengganu(PKKT)2007).
However,online Bus ticket reservation system enables customers to buy bus tickets,make payements
and ask for information online easily. The stuff also sell bus tickets after checking and confirming bus
ticket availability for the customers and print the bus ticket to the customer by using the bus ticket
reservation system(Imo Transport Company(ITC),International Institute Of Academic and Development
2015).Badariah (2007) emphasizes that online bus reservation system(Politeknik Kota Kuala
Terengganu)was to make sure that their online booking and reservation to their desired transport
companies with the facilities provided by the new system.
Similarly after considering the type of system that Badariah adopted,Imo transport adopted it with aim
of presenting customers at the comfort of their homes or offices.the system will also enlighten
customers and administrators the need to patronize the system ,also checking availability of routes
before boarding(Badariah,2007). In order for user to make online reservation, the user must first
register to the system. Once a member, he or she has to log in and proceed with the bus
reservation process. The system also allows the consumers to check the schedule and fare.
Online bus reservation system is useful for people who are travelling for long distances within
the country, for instance, Nairobi to Mombasa or between major towns in Kenya. This system is
meant to assist both the company of the buses and passengers in making work easier and
efficiently.
1.2Problem statement
Bus transport is one of the leading ,growing sector around the global .People country wide have
to travel either from home or to the offices thus travelling becoming essential in their daily life
and routines thus the bus station crowding with the customers (passengers).Currently the type of
system being use at the bus ticket counter is an internal system which is manually used in selling
the bus tickets(international Journal Of Computer Science And Statistics , vol 1 No2,2015).The
customers have to go to the counter to buy bus tickets or ask for the bus schedule ;the customers
will have to make long queue for a long time in order to secure a ticket .The customer is also
needed to pay in cash when purchasing the ticket .The issue of queue makes the bus company
services inconvenient to customers and wasting customers time .Therefore is a need of an online
based bus ticket reservation system which will provide reservation contents as a whole and in a
completed manner .In which at the beginning of the configuring a reservation, the user(customer)
is able to manage the reservation by selecting ,pay for the ticket; thus the passenger books a
reservation on his/her own online.
1.3 Research Objectives
The purpose of this research project is to develop a system that should be able:
1. To allow the customers to reserve the bus online thus no need to go to booking offices
and queue up to buy bus ticket in the counter.
2. To allow the customer to cancel their reservation if needed be.
3. To allow minimization of the number of staffs at the ticket box. The number of staff at
the counter can be reduced after the online bus reservation system has been adopted .
5. To enable the system, generate weekly reports of user to the admin on the transport
progress.
The proposed system will help the customer to register as a member before they make
reservation. Customer then has to check the availability of the buses seat before they booked.
After this process is successfully, the customer has to go to the bus station with his or her nation
identification card. Besides the customer, another user of the system is company’s staff or
administrator. They need to upload new information to the online system so that customer can
check the availability of the bus and reserved it.
