Research Plan

A. Rationale

The Philippines is an archipelago surrounded by large bodies of water which makes the

country extremely prone to typhoons and according to studies and data in the past couple of

years, our country experiences 16 tropical cyclones per year on average. There are also

problems with drainage systems in certain areas which can cause flooding. Because of

these typhoons, much of the country experiences flooding, which at times leads to

casualties in families. With this in mind the researchers thought of a way to lessen the

casualties by warning the people early on that there is water rising. This research aims to

build a hydro alarm that uses Water sensor and Light sensor. Together with the use of

accessible materials the researchers will make a Bi-Sensor Activated Hydro Alarm (BAHA).

If BAHA is successful, it can potentially change flood mitigation as it warns people that

there is water currently rising and they must get ready for a possible flood.

B. Research Questions, Hypotheses/ Expected Outcomes, Engineering Goals

• Research Questions

Generally this study aims to create a Bi-Sensor Activated Hydro Alarm

(BAHA) that will warn and alert the people about incoming floods.

In making BAHA, the following questions shall be answered by the

researchers.
1. How efficient is the BAHA in terms of:

1.1 Sensitivity of the sensors

1.2 Sturdiness

1.3 Time Delay

• Hypotheses/ Expected Outcomes

In line with the stated problems to be experimented or solved in building BAHA,

we can conclude the following hypothesis:

1. The BAHA will fulfill Its role and function efficiently in terms of:

1.1 Sensitivity of the sensors

1.2 Sturdiness

1.3 Time delay

• Engineering Goals

The goal of this project is to construct a flood detector that possesses a light sensor and a water level
sensor. It also aims to prevent further casualties during flash floods or typhoons by providing the flood
sensor for public, private properties and neighborhoods that are prone to frequent flooding.
