Welcome to Unit 3: Why did you take her phone?


During this unit we will learn vocabulary about different types of movies and their most common
characteristics. We will also give descriptions of past events using regular and irregular verbs. We will learn
how to give negative descriptions and how to ask and answer questions.

Concept 1. Vocabulary about types of movies.


Do you like watching movies? What are your favorite movies
ever?
During this unit we will learn different types of movies. Let’s do it!

• Romcom: Romantic comedies mix romantic with comedy elements.


They usually deal with love, and they make you laugh at the same
time.
• Action movies: They include big-budgets, chases, rescues, fights, escapes.
• Fantasy movie: It’s a form of fiction that often deals with magic,
myths, witches, etc.
• Horror movie: Horror films are meant to scare you, to frighten you
through the means of ghosts, supernatural forces, monsters.
• Animated movie: A film produced by photographing a series of gradually
changing drawings, etc, which give the illusion of movement when the
series is projected rapidly.
• Sci-fi movie: Science fiction movies deal with technology, the future, and
space travel.
• Comedy: Comedy films are amusing, funny, and they make you laugh.
They portray comic situations.
• Love story: Films that revolve around a couple that faces an obstacle in
their relationships.
• Musical: Movies where the plot integrates frequent musical numbers.

Simple past: Negative sentences

Concept 2.Use of simple past; negative and interrogative sentences

• We make the negative of the past with did not + base form of the verb.
• Subject + didn’t + verb (base form) + complement.
– I did not study for the test.
– Leila did not visit her grandma last summer
– Mariela and Lucas didn’t go to the hospital.

• BUT, what is “DID”. This is a very important verb. It is what we call a


“helping verb” (HP). The HP did helps us recognize the past tense.
• Look: Is this sentence
describing the present,
o Tomas not have breakfast.
past, future?
o Tomas did not have breakfast.

Now, I can identify that


it is in past tense.

• The short form of did not is didn’t. it’s more frequent.


• The simple past negative is the same for all persons.
o I didn’t hear the question.
o She didn’t take the money.
o They didn’t eat pizza.
• Do not make this mistake:
o Luz and Pedro did not went to the mall yesterday.

Simple past: Interrogative sentences

• To write questions about the past we follow this structure:


Did + subject + base form of the verb+ complement ?
• Did Martín ride his bike yesterday?
• Did Agustina eat sushi last night?
• Did Angelo play videogames yesterday?

• We make answers to these questions following this structure:


• Affirmative answers: yes, + subject+ did
She = Agustina
• Negative answers: no, + subject + didn’t.
