Lesson 6 - Writing A Book Report
BOOK REPORT
BOOK REPORT
• is a written composition or oral presentation that
describes, summarizes, and (often, but not always) evaluates a work
of fiction or nonfiction.
• is a description that gives a brief summary of a book and a reaction
to it.
• A book report is usually written for the readers of the book and is
completely factual.
• Book reports have a certain format they may vary in length and
complexity depending on the academic level and the importance of
the individual assignment.
Characteristics of a Book Report
• Book reports generally follow a basic format
that includes the following information:
• the title of the book and its year of publication
• the name of the author
• the genre (type or category) of the book (for
example, biography, autobiography, or fiction)
• the main subject, plot, or theme of the book.
• a brief summary of the key points or ideas
treated in the book
• the reader's response to the book, identifying
its apparent strengths and weaknesses
• brief quotations from the book to support
general observations
3 Types of
Book Report
PLOT SUMMARY
• When you are writing a plot summary for your book report you don't want
to simply retell the story.
• Explain what your opinion is of the story and why you feel the plot is so
compelling, or unrealistic, or sappy.
• Make sure that you use plenty of examples from the book to support your
opinions.
• Try starting the report with a sentence similar to the following:
• Make sure that you talk about each example or quotation you've
included. Make a direct connection between the theme and the example
from the book.
• After you have established the theme and thoroughly examined the way
it affects the book, include a few sentences about the impact the theme
had upon you and why it made the book more or less enjoyable to read.
TIPS IN WRITING A BOOK REPORT
• No matter what type of book report you decide to write, make
sure that your writing is clear and expressive and that you
include examples from the book to support your opinions.
• Read the books or story thoroughly and with comprehension.
