Centauri High School

History

Centauri High School was originally built in the early 1950s, but by using a $30
million grant in the last two years a new building was constructed. This school has a
total of 299 students that are composed of a few small towns such as La Jara,
Manassa, Capulin, and Estrella. They cover a very broad geographical area due to
the community’s small population.

School Factors
Centauri is a small school with a long history. However, in recent years the school

building has changed, so a new layout has been a subtle adjustment. With it being two

stories, the second floor is where the library and most classrooms are, and the bottom

floor contains two gyms, a weight room, the main office and a few other classrooms

including the FCS classroom. The school’s website doesn’t specify which FCS classes

are offered, but from talking with staff members it is apparent that they have a kitchen

which allows for foods classes. They also provide the basic child/human development

courses. The biggest organizations and groups that students are involved with include

FFA, FBLA, and FCCLA. Most students also participate in sports that are offered such

as volleyball, football, cross country, basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, baseball and

track and field.

Academic Characteristics
As shown above, in recent years Centauri High School has been academically

performing at or above the Colorado state average. Ironically, although more than half

the student population is of Hispanic ethnicity there is currently only one student in

the school that does not speak English, so they do not have any ELL classes.

Graduation requirements include taking credits in English, Science, Mathematics,

Spanish, Social Studies, Physical Education and selected electives.

Instructional Implications
Centauri and surrounding schools have had strong FCCLA programs with support

from parents, staff members, and community members. It is great that the value of

this program is recognized in the community and students are involved in many

different projects within the community. Its small town vibe gives me the impression

that most everyone knows everyone, and that will help me get to know students and

staff quicker. I also think it will be beneficial that these small towns have many local

businesses such as bakeries and fabric shops that we can collaborate with to provide

opportunities for students to explore and learn about their business first-hand.
